How To: FloatNote Gives You Contact-Specific Popups That Remind You What to Talk About During Calls
Every so often, we come across an app that makes us wonder "Why didn't someone think of this before?" This is definitely the case with developer Dor Sakal's latest offering, FloatNote. The app allows you to create a reminder note that will appear the next time you call a certain contact. It's a simple concept, yes, but a very useful one nonetheless. Ever forget to invite someone over to dinner or compliment them on their new haircut? Then this app is for you. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.

Step 1: Install FloatNoteYou can find Sakal's app on the Google Play Store with a quick search of the term FloatNote, but if you'd rather skip straight to the install page, point your Android device to this link.

Step 2: Create a ReminderWhen you first launch FloatNote, the app will give you a nice little overview of its features. Press the "What is it?" button to view the demo, then tap anywhere on the screen to head to the app's main menu. From here, simply tap the + button at the bottom of the screen, then select either "Choose from Contacts" or "Choose from Call Log". Use the next screen to select a person for whom you'd like to create a reminder. Next, just type in a note that you'd like to see when you call this person, then press the save icon at the top of the screen. The free version of FloatNote limits you to 5 reminders comprised of 30 or fewer characters, but more reminders can be unlocked via an in-app purchase for as little as $1.77, and a unlimited version is available for $4.88.

Step 3: Use Your ReminderAmazingly, that's all there is to set up. You can forget about this reminder now, but you'll see it the next time you call (or receive a call from) the person it's associated with. A floating note will appear in your call screen interface when you contact this person, and you can move the reminder freely around the screen. Like I said, this is one of those apps that just works on all levels. Has FloatNote helped you remember to broach a topic with one of your friends or family members?

How To: Change App Icons on Your Galaxy Note 3 Without a Third-Party Launcher
Samsung devices may dominate the Android market, but that doesn't mean everybody loves TouchWiz, the user interface on all of their smartphones and tablets. It's difficult to modify, comes with lots of bloatware, and isn't much to look at, to say the least. The solution is easy—install a third-party launcher. But ditching Samsung's proprietary skin often means giving up some features that make the device special in the first place, so instead of that, let's just make TouchWiz better. We've already shown you guides on how to rename apps and change system fonts, so today let's change the default app icons on stock TouchWiz without using a third-party launcher. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.
To change app icons, you will need to have a rooted Galaxy Note 3 (or other rooted TouchWiz device) and "Unknown sources" enabled.

Step 1: Download & Install WizIconizerFor this guide, we'll be using an app called WizIconizer from Android dev sabeersas, and since it's not available in Google Play, you'll have to download it from the link below.WizIconizer 1.06 (beta) WizIconizer is currently in beta, so keep an eye out on this XDA thread for future updates to the application, or hit up the WinIconizer website.

Step 2: Download a Font PackIn the latest version of WizIconizer, you can use pretty much use any icon pack found in the Google Play Store. Some examples include Long Shadow, Belle UI, and Moonshine. In future updates to WizIconizer, you'll be able to choose and download icon packs not available on Google Play directly from the Online tab in the app.

Step 3: Set You New App IconsTo select your desired icon pack, just long-press on the one you want listed under the Local tab, then hit Apply. If this is the first time using WizIconizer, you'll need to Grant Superuser access. Then just Restart your device for the new app icons to appear on your home screen.

Step 4: Enjoy Your New IconsOnce your device is back up, your icons will be changed. Depending on your apps, some may not have changed—especially less popular ones. Stock Google apps and others like Facebook, Instagram, Netflix, Xposed, etc. will all have new icons.

Restore Default IconsTo get back your stock TouchWiz app icons, tap on the Menu button while you're in WizIconizer and select the Restore Default Icons setting that appears at the bottom. Your device will then restart and restore your stock app icons.

How To: Adjust Display Brightness Right from Your Android's Status Bar (No Root Required)

How To: Adjust Display Brightness Right from Your Android's Status Bar (No Root Required)
Adjusting the brightness on your Android device is a simple but highly utilized action. For the most part, aside from the Sprint LG G3 variant, the brightness slider can be conveniently found nestled in your notification panel. And though it is easy to access, there is a small drawback to this feature.Unless you're running Android 5.0 Lollipop, adjusting your brightness from within the notification panel does not provide a proper preview of what your actual display will look like with the adjusted level, since more likely than not your notification panel is black. This leaves you to go back and forth between notification panel and home screen to get that perfect brightness.Regardless of the Android version you're running, let's remove the unnecessary step of pulling down your notification panel and adjust brightness levels directly from your status bar using Display Brightness from developer RubberBigPepper. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.

Step 1: Install Display BrightnessTo get started, install the free app from the Google Play Store.

Step 2: Customize Your SliderOne of the great things about Display Brightness is that the slider is fully customizable. Open the app to adjust its settings, where you can change the size, color, transparency, alignment, and more. There's also an "Exclude list" that allows you to disable this feature for specified apps.Once you get your slider looking perfect, select "Enable indicator."

Step 3: Start Using Your SliderNow that you've made your adjustments and have enabled the indicator, swipe the slider in your status bar to quickly adjust the brightness. Also, just so you're aware, with Display Brightness enabled, the brightness slider in your notification panel will no longer be visible, which seems practical as it removes the redundancy (disabling the indicator will cause your original brightness slider to return). For the purpose of this guide, the slider in the screenshots above are fairly visible, but make it as transparent as you wish. It's a useful feature that'll make adjusting brightness seamless.Try it out and let us know what you think in the comments below, or over on our Facebook, Google+, and Twitter feeds.

The Notification Center shows your notifications history—allowing you to scroll back and see what you've missed. There are two ways to see your alerts from the Notification Center: From the Lock screen, swipe up from the middle of the screen. From any other screen, swipe down from the center of the top of your screen.

How To: Hide All Your Browser Tabs with One Click in Chrome, Safari, Opera, and Firefox

How To: Hide All Your Browser Tabs with One Click in Chrome, Safari, Opera, and Firefox
At some point or another, we've all been in that awful situation when someone walks up behind you while you're looking at something you don't want them to see. Whether you're tweeting during class, shopping for gifts online, or looking at something a little more NSFW, there are times when it would be nice to just click a button and have all your open tabs disappear.Luckily, there's an add-on for that. A few, actually.

Chrome, Safari, & OperaFor users who browse with Chrome, Safari, or Opera, there's an add-on developed by Thomas Greiner called PanicButton that does just what it sounds like it would—it installs a panic button in your browser that will hide all your tabs with one click. Image via googleusercontent.com Once it's installed, you can hide, restore, and even password-protect your tabs to make sure no one sees anything you don't want them to. When your tabs are hidden, the button turns green and an icon appears that shows how many are open, but you can disable that feature if you don't want it to give you away. You can also use a custom keyboard shortcut (and your ninja reflexes) to hide your tabs even quicker.Download PanicButton for Chrome, Safari, or Opera

FirefoxFor Firefox users, there are two different add-ons with similar functionality. The first is also called Panic Button, although it's made by a different developer, and it does pretty much the same thing as the one above minus the password protection feature. It gives you the option to hide or minimize your tabs, or just quit Firefox altogether. The second option for Firefox is called Hide Tabbar. It's a little simpler than the others in that it uses a keyboard shortcut to hide and restore your tabs. Nothing more, nothing less. So, if you're looking for something easy to use and only need it to perform its core function, Hide Tabbar may be the way to go. Image via mozilla.net Download Panic Button or Hide Tabbar for Firefox So, the next time you're looking at something you'd rather not share (we won't ask), don't scramble to close out or switch windows, which just makes it look sketchy anyway. Let one of these extensions to the dirty work for you.Do you know of a similar add-on that works for Internet Explorer? Let us know in the comments.

Since any machine translation is going to be somewhat inaccurate, it would be ideal to find an option in the site to show the English version. Can you see anything like that on the page you are viewing? If not Firefox does not have translation built-in, although it is under consideration for a future version.

News: ZTE Tempo Go Brings Google's New Version of Android to Most US Carriers
When Google first announced Android Oreo (Go edition), many believed these devices would be focused more on developing countries. However, thanks to ZTE, we'll be getting Android Go stateside, so US customers on even the tightest of budgets can still enjoy the convenience of a smartphone. The ZTE Tempo Go is a part of the wave of Android Go devices announced at Mobile World Congress 2018. These devices have low-end specs, but they compensate by running a slimmed down version of Android Oreo. By combining inexpensive parts with a lighter version of Android, customers can enjoy a phone with relatively smooth performance at prices that previously seemed unobtainable for smartphones.Don't Miss: What is Android Go and how is it different from Android One?

ZTE Tempo Go SpecsOS: Android 8.1 Oreo (Go edition) CPU: Qualcomm Snapdragon 210 GPU: Adreno 304 RAM: 1 GB RAM Storage: 8 GB with microSD support (up to 32 GB) Display: 5.0" TFT 854 x 480 Rear Camera: 5 MP Front Camera: 2 MP Battery Capacity: 2,200 mAh Ports: 3.5 mm headphone jack, micro USB 2.0 Image by Technology News/YouTube

Android 8.1 Oreo (Go Edition)At first glance, the ZTE Tempo Go's specs are scary bad. I don't remember the last time I saw a phone with only 1 GB of RAM. However, this is where the beauty of Android Go comes in. Unlike a phone trying to run regular Android, these phones will run smoothly despite these ridiculously low specifications. With Android Go, customers get a stock Android experience designed from the ground up to use fewer resources. This includes a custom suite of Google apps that can handle running on a Snapdragon 210 and 1 GB RAM. Android Go includes a Go edition of YouTube, Gmail, Assistant, Maps, Messaging, Dialer, Camera, and Gboard. Image by Beebom/YouTube Furthermore, the Play Store has been tweaked to heavily recommend Go edition apps. There is even a File cleaner/manager app which includes a nifty feature that enables wireless file sharing among friends. We were so impressed with this file manager that we highlighted it in our best file cleaner roundup, which you can check out at the link below.Don't Miss: Most File Cleaners Are Trash — Here Are the Ones You Can Trust In addition, Google opened up its reworked OS to app developers so you can enjoy more than just Google-made apps. Apps such as Skype and Instagram have already created Go editions of their popular offerings.
Pricing & AvailabilityAndroid Go really shines when it comes to pricing. The ZTE Tempo Go will retail for a mere $80 in the US, which is unheard of among phones that run the latest version of Android. The ZTE Tempo Go is available today. Use the link below to try your luck at getting this device — but as a heads up, this variant will only work with AT&T and T-Mobile.Purchase the ZTE Tempo Go for $80 However, according to ZTE's official technical specs, the Tempo Go works on the CDMA and LTE bands that Verizon Wireless uses, so expect a carrier deal soon with the top US wireless carrier. With the ZTE Tempo Go, smartphones become much more accessible to millions of Americans. No longer does a sub-$100 smartphone equal a horribly lagging experience that's not worth owning. How To: The Easiest Way to Transfer Files Between Different Cloud Service Accounts on Android
With limited storage options available on the Nexus 5, cloud storage can definitely come in handy. But sometimes, with the seemingly endless options of cloud services for us to choose from, our online data can get a bit disorganized. If you're like me, you've got about 5 or 6 cloud storage accounts. In this case, it's very easy to lose track of what is stored where. And sometimes, the trial period of extra storage space on one of these services can expire, possibly resulting in lost data.Developer i-Smart Solutions has come up with a handy tool to manage all of your cluttered cloud storage. Their app Rainbow bridges the gap between popular services such as Dropbox, Google Drive, Box, and OneDrive, among others. It offers an easy method of transferring any files between these services, allowing you to finally get all of that online data organized. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.

Step 1: Install RainbowHead to the Google Play Store to download Rainbow directly to your device.

Step 2: Attach Your Cloud Service AccountsWhen you first open Rainbow, you'll be shown a list of all the services it is capable of transferring files between. Tap one of your services to begin. On the next screen, you can give this account a nickname for easy recognition. When you're satisfied with your entry, tap the Forward Arrow at the top to proceed. Next, you'll be asked to enter the login credentials for this cloud account, and when that's finished, you'll be asked to grant Rainbow access to manage this account. Next, you'll be taken back out to the main screen. Here, you can repeat this process for any other cloud services you want Rainbow to manage.

Step 3: Transfer Files Between ServicesWhen you've got all of your cloud accounts in order, you can start moving files between them. Tap the Data Transfer tab at the top of Rainbow's home screen, then select the cloud service that you want to move files away from. Next, you'll be shown a list of all the files you have stored on the selected account. From here, tap any file that you would like to move and select Copy. How To: Get a Floating Video Window While Multitasking on Your iPad in iOS 9
Out of all the new features in iOS 9, the two most important ones specific to iPads are split screen multitasking and floating video windows. The feature is called Picture in Picture, and here's what you need to know about it.Don't Miss: How to Run Two Apps Side by Side on Your iPad in iOS 9 Don't Miss: All the New Features in iOS 9 You Need to Know About

How to Watch Movies in Other AppsYou can use Picture in Picture to minimize videos from iTunes in the corners of the iPad. All you have to do is press the Home button while watching a video (doesn't work with videos taken from your device) and the window will minimize into the corner. Once there, you can use your iPad like normal, checking messages, browsing Instagram, etc., all while your video continues playing.Move the window around to any of the four corners by holding down on it and dragging it across the screen. You can also pinch in and out to resize it. Finally, pause, close, or maximize the video through icons that appear at the bottom of the minimized window.

How to Continue FaceTime Calls in Other AppsThis feature also lets you continue FaceTime calls (both videos and audio) on your home screen and in apps. Just like with videos, simply hit the Home button during a FaceTime conversation and it will minimize in the bottom corner where you can move and resize it, as well as maximize it, mute the audio, and end the call. How To: Make Siri Run Google Assistant Commands on Your iPhone

How To: Make Siri Run Google Assistant Commands on Your iPhone
Using Siri to perform tasks on your Google Home device was never possible until Apple released Siri Shortcuts in iOS 12. Actually, it wasn't possible until Google added support for Siri Shortcuts for Google Assistant in Nov. 2018. No matter the timing, the important thing here is that you can use Siri to command Google Assistant which, in turn, can command Google Home.Normally, when you want to do something on your Google Home in another room, such as playing music or broadcasting a message to others in your home, you'd do so with commands in the Google Assistant app for iPhone. But with Siri Shortcuts support, you can simply say "Hey Siri, play music" or Hey Siri, do your chores," and Siri will relay that to Google Assistant which will tell it to Google Home.Don't Miss: Use Siri to Play Spotify Music & Start Playlists on Your iPhone As you can imagine, the possibilities are endless, and it's not just about Google Home either. You can just tell Siri to perform actions on Google Assistant period. For instance, you can control smart devices such as smart light bulbs or smart thermostats that only have Google Assistant support (not all smart devices support HomeKit, after all).

Step 1: Install or Update Google AssistantYou'll just need the Google Assistant app for this, so install it or update it if it's already on your iPhone. It's also worth installing the Google Home app too — you won't necessarily need it, but it's good for seeing everything associated with your Google Home.Google Assistant requires iOS 10.0 or later. After it's done installing, make sure to sign into the app using your Google account that's connected to your Google Home devices. If you don't have any Google Home devices, just make sure you're logged into the Google account you want to use.App Store Link: Google Assistant - Your own personal Google (free) Buy Google Home Smart Speaker & Google Assistant: Best Buy | Google | Walmart

Step 2: Add the 'Ok Google' Siri ShortcutOnce logged into the Google Assistant app, tap on the visual snapshot button in the bottom right, then add "Ok Google" to Siri. The prompt will be front and center, just tap on the "Add to Siri" button. If it's not there, it's likely you already enabled the "Ok Google" Siri Shortcut.Right away, it'll give you a prompt to record your "Hey Google" Siri phrase. Either press the big red record button or "Type Phrase" (if Type to Siri is enabled). Next, record or type out the Siri phrase you want to use, such as "Ok Google," the typical and suggested phrase. When recording your voice, if you aren't satisfied with it or it didn't hear you correctly, you can "Re-Record" your phrase. Tap "Done" in the top right to finish. Now, whenever you speak or type to Siri "Ok Google," or whatever phrase you ended up choosing, the Google Assistant app on your iPhone will open up with further dictation ready and waiting for you.

Step 3: Give Google Assistant App CommandsTo make Siri do all your Google Assistant deeds, you'll need to first tell those commands to Google Assistant so that they will show up as Siri Suggestions you can activate. You can use your new "Ok Google" shortcut to open Google Assistant with the mic ready, or you can open the app up manually and tap on the mic icon at the bottom. Next, just give it a command, such as "Show me the latest headlines."If your end goal is to use Siri to perform actions on your Google Home via the Google Assistant, you can say something like "Play Spotify Discover Weekly playlist on Google Home," if you'd like to listen to a specific playlist on Spotify on your Home speaker. If you have more than one Google Home speaker, make sure to give the speaker's specific name, or it won't know which speaker you're referring to.You could also broadcast a specific message from Siri to your Google Home so that it plays on all Home speakers connected to the same Google account. For instance, if you find yourself screaming "Dinner is ready" to someone upstairs, you could instead tell Google Assistant to "Broadcast dinner is ready."Continue giving Google Assistant commands that you normally give it, whether for interaction directly in the Google Assistant app or for sending commands to a Google Home device. They can be as simple as "Stop music," "Play next song," or "Turn on the lights" (if you have connected smart lights).Don't Miss: Use the Shortcuts App for Custom Siri Actions & More Buy Google Home Mini: Best Buy | Google | Walmart

Step 4: Add the Commands as Siri ShortcutsNow that Siri has an idea of the commands you're giving Google Assistant, it'll recommend them as Siri Shortcuts for Google Assistant. To find the suggestions, open up the Settings app, tap "Assistant," then "Siri & Search."Here, make sure "Siri & Suggestions" is toggled on. It's not technically needed, so you could un-toggle it, but then you'd need to at least make sure "Show App" is toggled on. Otherwise, you will not see any of Siri's suggestions.Next, tap on "Shortcuts" at the bottom, and you'll see a list of your current My Assistant Shortcuts up top (like the "Ok Google" one) and suggested ones under Recent Shortcuts for the ones you used in Step 3.Tap on the shortcut you want to add, and it'll prompt you to record or type a phrase for Siri to deliver the action. As an example, for "Play Spotify Discover Weekly playlist on Google Home," you can use a phrase that's shorter, like "Play discover weekly." For "Broadcast dinner is ready," you can simply say "Dinner is ready." You can also view suggested Siri Shortcuts for Google Assistant directly from "Siri & Search" within the Settings app. Recent ones will appear right away under Suggested Shortcuts, and you can tap "All Shortcuts" to view the rest for Assistant and other apps. Additionally, you can also access Google Assistant's Siri & Search settings from the "Siri & Search" page (just scroll down and select "Assistant").All the Siri Shortcuts you add will automatically be displayed at the very top of the Assistant Shortcuts page as well as in "My Shortcuts" in the main "Siri & Search" settings.

Step 5: Tell Siri to Do Your Assistant TasksThe last step of the process is to make Siri do all your Google Assistant or Google Home deeds. Invoke "Hey Siri" or hold the Side button on iPhones with Face ID or the Home button if your iPhone has one of those. Then, speaker your Siri Shortcut phrase (or type it if you see the Type to Siri screen). For example, if I say "Play discover weekly," Siri will send that to Google Assistant which will then send that to the Google Home speaker I set in Step 3. If I say "Dinner is ready," it will do the same thing, but this time broadcast "Dinner is ready" to all of the Google Home speakers connected to the same Google account. It's that simple. OK, maybe not so simple, but it is fairly intuitive once you get the hang of it. This is also an easy way to dip into the world of Siri Shortcuts, which can get complicated, powerful, and useful if you dive into Apple's Shortcuts app.Don't Miss: Gadget Hacks' Guides on Using Apple's Shortcuts App for Automated TasksFollow Gadget Hacks on Pinterest, Reddit, Twitter, YouTube, and Flipboard Sign up for Gadget Hacks' daily newsletter or weekly Android and iOS updates Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Flipboard

How To: Give Your Status Bar Stock Android's Material Design Icons & Matching Colors

How To: Give Your Status Bar Stock Android's Material Design Icons & Matching Colors
These days, the user experience on stock Android is a lot more refined and polished than manufacturer skins like Samsung's TouchWiz or HTC's Sense. This is mostly due to Material Design, the look and feel that Google implemented back in Android Lollipop, which has finally started to give Android a unified appearance with its sleek icons and abundant use of colors. To notice the difference, you needn't look any further than the status bar at the top of your screen. With stock Android, the icons are subtle and understated, while the background of the status bar matches the color of the app you're currently using. Manufacturer-skinned versions of Android, on the other hand, continue to use cartoonish icons here, and the status bar may or may not be color-matching, even if you're running Lollipop or higher.Luckily, though, developer James Fenn has come up with an ingenious way to get stock Android's status bar on almost any device. His latest app simply overlays a color-matching status bar on top of your existing one, complete with Material Design icons and theming. To top that all off, the app doesn't even require root, so this is one that anybody can try.

Step 1: Install StatusTo update your ugly old status bar with Material Design, start by installing Fenn's app, which is simply called Status.Install Status for free from the Google Play Store

Step 2: Grant PermissionsWhen you first launch Status, there are a handful of additional permissions that you'll have to grant so that the app can overlay your screen, display notification icons, and keep your connectivity indicators accurate. The app has a set-up screen that will walk you through this part, so it's pretty easy.To start, tap the "Grant Access" button beneath the first permission, then select the "Status Service" entry on the next screen. Next, simply enable the permission with the switch at the top of the screen, then confirm your choice on the popup. From there, press your device's back button to head back to the Status app. Next, just repeat this same process with the other two permissions, then press the check mark in the bottom-right corner of the screen when you're done.

Step 3: Adjust OptionsOnce you make it to the app's main menu, start by enabling the "Status Bar Service" switch. From here, make sure the "Status Bar Coloring" option is also enabled if you want your new status bar to match the color of the app you're using. In the event that the automatic color-matching fails or the app you're using has no color, you can set a default color with the "Status Bar Color" option, and this will be used as a fallback of sorts. The app does a good job of automatically matching the color of any app you're using, but occasionally, this can be off. If you notice any apps with mismatching status bar colors in the future, come back to the app's main menu, then tap the "Add Apps" button. From here, enable the switch next to any troublesome app, then use the sliders on the popup to manually adjust the status bar coloring for that particular app.

Step 4: Get a Color-Matching Material Design Status BarFrom now on, your status bar will be using Material Design, so you'll get the sleek icons and indicators, plus the color will match the app you're currently using. This only applies to the status bar itself, so when you expand your notification tray, you'll still see the stock interface—but, at the very least, you've finally gotten rid of that ugly old status bar. The horizontal dotted icon in your iPhone's status bar serves as an indicator of your device's network strength. How To: Eliminate Screen Flicker & Lower Minimum Brightness on Android

How To: Eliminate Screen Flicker & Lower Minimum Brightness on Android
If you pay close attention, you might notice that the screen on your Android begins to flicker or pulsate when you lower the brightness past a certain point. This is a result of the AMOLED technology Samsung, among other manufacturers, use in their displays, and the way that these types of screens operate. With a traditional LCD screen, a light is projected through the array of pixels to increase or decrease their luminosity, and brightness adjustments are made by simply dimming this light. But with AMOLED displays, each pixel emits its own light—so in order to decrease your screen's brightness, the electrical current flowing through these pixels has to be reduced in some way. It's this reduced current that can make your screen seem to pulse or flicker. An Xposed Module from developer Tony Manou can cure these AMOLED woes, with the added benefit of allowing you to darken your screen further than the minimum stock brightness level. It accomplishes this by adding a transparent layer of black atop your screen, then providing you with an easily accessible slider to darken this transparent layer. In effect, the module will darken the pixels being displayed on your screen without having to lower the current flowing through them. This means that you can keep your stock brightness slider at a high enough level that screen flicker issues are not present, while still darkening the actual luminosity of your display when you need to save your eyes. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.
RequirementsRooted Galaxy S5 (or any other rooted Android device) Xposed Framework Installed Unknown Sources Enabled

Installing 'Screen Filter'Manou's Xposed Module is fittingly-named Screen Filter. Head to the Download section of your Xposed Installer app to search it by name, then tap the top result. From here, swipe over to the Versions tab, then hit the Download button next to the most recent entry. After a few seconds, Android's installer interface should come right up, so tap Install on the next screen. When installation has finished, Xposed will notify you that the module needs to be activated. Tap the Activate and Reboot button on this notification, and Xposed will handle the rest automatically.

Using 'Screen Filter'After installation, the Screen Filter module does not require any further setup—it simply adds an extra slider to your notification tray. A button at the right of this slider reads Off when the screen filter is not in use. Simply toggle this switch on, then use the slider to darken your screen. You can still use your stock brightness slider to adjust the amount of current flowing through your screen's pixels. I'd suggest finding a sweet spot where the flickering or pulsating issues aren't present, then using the Screen Filter slider to go from there. As you can see from the screenshots, the actual image being rendered by your display has been darkened. This essentially adds a partial Greyscale Effect, which on an AMOLED display, is known to save battery life. In the end, not only should Screen Filter cure any flickering issues you've been experiencing, but it also lets you darken your display beyond the stock values and even has a positive effect on battery life.Which of these three benefits do you find the most useful? Let us know in the comments section below, as well as on Facebook and Twitter.

How To: Are Your Cloud Documents Safe from Hackers? Make Sure with These Free Cloud-Worthy Encryption Programs

The convenience of storing things on the cloud can definitely make life easier, but if you're storing sensitive files, it could be a total disaster if anyone hacked your account. Some encryption services can be expensive, but if you just need it for personal use, there are some really great ones that don't cost anything. Here are three programs that let you encrypt your cloud storage for free. Image via co.uk
BoxCryptorBoxCryptor works with any cloud service and is compatible with Windows, Mac, Android, iOS, and EncFS-Linux. It lets you encrypt individual files instead of whole folders or drives and encrypts everything locally without sending it to any third parties. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.
You can sign up for a free personal account, which allows you to encrypt one drive, or if you want multiple drives, you can pay the $40 for the unlimited personal account. Even with the free one, though, you can still sync it with as many devices as you want and there's no limit to the storage space.

DataLockerDataLocker is a program available for Windows, Mac, iPhone and iPad. It lets you store your files locally and on the cloud and it's free and unlimited. Like BoxCryptor, it lets you sync your data across all your devices. On your computer, you would simply drag and drop the file you want encrypted to the DataLocker application window to encrypt it with a private passphrase. That encrypted file can then be stored anywhere on your local file system or in your Dropbox folder. In order to decrypt the file on another device, that device would also need the DataLocker app. Pretty easy, right?

CloudfoggerCloudfogger is compatible with Dropbox, Google Drive, SkyDrive, and emails, and it works on Windows, Mac (beta), and Android, with iOS support "coming soon." You can add email addresses to an approved users list to make it easy to share files without giving anyone your password. Cloudfogger also has a Microsoft AddIn that lets you encrypt e-mail attachments on Outlook.
What Programs Do You Use?Do you encrypt the data you store in the cloud? Know of any great free encryption programs we missed? Tell us what you use in the comments.

NetEase Music: The Free Service That Will Get You to Leave Spotify

NetEase Music: The Free Service That Will Get You to Leave Spotify
We recently lost Grooveshark, the free music streaming service that supplied users with a huge catalog of free music anytime, anywhere. Since its shutdown, I have been scrambling to find a half-decent alternative, and my expectations were more than exceeded when I found NetEase Music.Don't Miss: How to Get Spotify Premium Features on Android for Free The only drawback to the app was that it only shipped in Chinese, but thanks to Google Translate and some APK tweaking by XDA user nvincent, we have a functioning English port. Most of the features included in NetEase Music can also be found on services like Pandora, Spotify, Google Play Music, and the upcoming Apple Music, but with NetEase Music you won't have to spend a dime. Yup, that means offline playback, unlimited skips, radio stations, and commercial-free content. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.
NetEase Music vs. The CompetitionJust like Spotify, NetEase Music lets you search, save, and download any song from their catalog. You'll also have the ability to sync your playlists and favorite tracks across all your mobile devices and their web interface by creating a free NetEase account. There are also options to increase the streaming and download quality up to 320 Kbps, the same level that Spotify Premium offers. But NetEase isn't done there. You'll also get features that are not included with Spotify Premium, like displaying links to music videos and showing lyrics directly on your home screen. You should know that while NetEase does not come with audio ads that interrupt playback like Pandora, there is a quick splash screen displayed when you return to the app, but that's a small price compared to all the killer features you get.
Step 1: Install NetEase MusicSince this is a port of the official NetEase Music app, it is not hosted on the Google Play Store. Instead you will need to enable app installation from "Unknown sources," then manually install the APK.Download NetEaseMusic (.apk)

Step 2: Create a NetEase Account (Optional)If you'd like to keep your music synced across your devices, you'll need a NetEase account. This will also allow you to follow your favorite artists and subscribe to user-generated playlists. Since the registration page has not been translated, use the screenshot below to help you fill out the appropriate email, password, and CAPTCHA text fields. After receiving the registration email, click the link I have highlighted below to complete the registration process.

Navigating NetEase MusicWhen you first open NetEase, you'll see a lot of Chinese text—ignore that, as the front page is full of popular artists from China, but all major western artists are available to you.For those of you who have opted to not create an account, you can go ahead and begin exploring the app. If you did create a NetEase account, tap the the overflow menu icon, then tap Login. Select the NetEase Login option, then enter your credentials. From the app's action bar, you'll see three sections; the main page, a "My Music" page, and a NetEase profile page. The main section is further split into Recommended, Playlists, Radio, and Charts. From those sections, you'll be able to discover new music and user-generated playlists that you can follow. However, if you already know what you're looking for, tap the magnifying glass search icon to search for an artist, song or album. NetEase also comes with a Shazam-like music identifier. To access the listener, tap the microphone icon from the app's overflow menu. If the app is able to figure out which song is playing, it will display the song name and give you the option to play it. My Music contains all your saved music and the artists and playlists you've subscribed to. To follow an artist or playlist, you'll need to tap the subscribe button at the top of their page. The NetEase account section is only useful if you actually use their social networking features, so most of you will never need to use this.

Now Playing ScreenOnce you begin playing a song, you'll be brought to a "Now Playing" screen that offers you all the features you'd find in most music players. You can jump to the song's artist or album, but unlike other services, you can also hit a link to the music video if one is available. Another useful feature of NetEase Music is the ability to download a song for offline playback. When you tap the download icon, you'll see options to save the currently playing song to your internal storage, along with the ability to choose the quality of the download. To access downloaded files outside the app, head to sdcard/netease/cloudmusic/music. You will also be able to download songs and albums as you search for them. To view the progress of your pending downloads, head to the Download Manager found in the "My Music" section.

Additional SettingsIn the Settings menu, you can fine tune your audio experience by increasing the streaming quality if you have a NetEase account, but you can set the download quality to any level you like regardless of whether you have an account or not. There is also an option to limit streaming and downloading to Wi-Fi only, if you're worried about going over your mobile data limit. "Desktop Lyrics" adds a lyric overlay over all your apps which can be used to set up an impromptu karaoke session if you're feeling the urge. I would also suggest you stay away from applying a different Theme, because doing so will cause the app to force-close before it can properly open.Did NetEase Music finally get you to ditch your music service? Let me know your thoughts in the comments below.Follow Android Hacks over on Facebook and Twitter, or Gadget Hacks over on Facebook, Google+, and Twitter, for more Android tips.

How To: Add Functionality & Declutter the Android Lock Screen on Your Nexus 5

How To: Add Functionality & Declutter the Android Lock Screen on Your Nexus 5
The Android lock screen interface is an integral part of our everyday use. For those of us who use lock screen security, it functions as a barrier between the sensitive data contained within our smartphones and potential outside access. Even if you don't use a pattern or PIN to secure your phone, you still interact with the lock screen every time you go to use it.Developer Hamzah Malik has created an Xposed Module that will give this central aspect of Android some long-overdue love. It's called Lockscreen Tweakbox, and it allows you to add functionality and make some visual tweaks to the Android lock screen interface. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.
RequirementsRooted Nexus 5 (other rooted Android devices may or may not work) Xposed Framework installed Unknown Sources enabled

Step 1: Install Lockscreen TweakboxTo get the module installed, head to the Download section of your Xposed Installer app and search Lockscreen Tweakbox. From here, tap the top result, then swipe over to the Versions tab and hit the Download button next to the most recent entry. Images via wonderhowto.com Android's installer interface should come up momentarily, so hit Install on the next screen. Images via wonderhowto.com When that's finished, you'll get a notification from Xposed telling you that the module isn't activated yet and a reboot is needed. Just tap the Activate and reboot button on this notification to take care of both things at once. Images via wonderhowto.com
Step 2: Modify Your Lock ScreenWhen your phone has finished booting back up, open the Lockscreen Tweakbox app from your app drawer.

Add Unlimited Unlocking AttemptsIf you use lock screen security and you don't like being locked out for 30 seconds after you've missed on 5 attempts, tick the box next to Unlimited Attempts. Images via wonderhowto.com

Hide the Alarm Icon or Emergency Call ButtonUse the Hide Alarm option if you don't want to see Android's Upcoming Alarm icon on your lock screen. Images via wonderhowto.com For users with lock screen security enabled, Hide Emergency will remove the Emergency Call button from your lock screen, but as stated in the app, use this option with caution—there's a reason it's there and painless to use, but then again, if you hand your phone to a child, they can easily make unintended 911 calls, which is never a good thing.

Make Your Wallpaper Different from the Home ScreenYou can change the background of your lock screen with either of the two options under the Background category. Tap Colour, and you'll be shown a menu that allows you to select a solid color as your lock screen background. Images via wonderhowto.com The Image option lets you choose any photo stored on your device to use as a lock screen background image. When you tap the entry, you'll be taken into your device's file chooser interface, where you can simply tap the picture you want to use. Images via wonderhowto.com

Access the Notification Tray & Show Clock in Status BarUnder the Statusbar category, Allow notifications lets users with lock screen security have access to their notification tray. Show Clock will show the time in the status bar area for both secured and unsecured lock screens. Images via wonderhowto.com

Step 3: Save Your WorkWhen you're satisfied with all of the changes you've made, tap the three-dot menu button in the top-right corner and select Reboot. At this point, Lockscreen Tweakbox will ask for Superuser access, so hit Grant on the next popup. Images via wonderhowto.com When you get back up, all of your lock screen tweaks will be in effect. (1) No tweaks applied, (2) Clock added to status bar, "Emergency Call" removed, (3) Notification tray on secure lock screen. Images via wonderhowto.com Which tweaks did you apply to your lock screen? Let us know in the comments section below.
