Some manufacturers, like Samsung and LG, have had split-screen multitasking on their custom versions of Android for years. But starting with Android Nougat, Google added this functionality to AOSP, which means that all phones and tablets running Android 7.0 or higher will now have a new multi-window mode.However, there is one disappointing issue: Nougat's split-screen mode won't allow you to run the same app side by side. This feature would be useful for things like copying text between two Google Docs files, or keeping multiple text message threads open simultaneously. You could clone apps yourself for side-by-side use, but that's a relatively clunky option just for multi-window mode.Lucky for us, developer IJP fixed this with a simple non-root app that lets you run two instances of the same app on Android Nougat in one screen.

Step 1: Install Parallel Windows for NougatTo get this trick going, start by installing the app, which is called Parallel Windows for Nougat. Keep in mind, though, this will only work if your phone or tablet is running Android 7.0 or higher, and only with apps that allow split-screening to begin with.Install Parallel Windows for Nougat for free from the Google Play Store

Step 2: Grant PermissionsGo ahead and launch the app, at which point it will inform you that it's in its early stages of development, and some bugs are still being ironed out. Nonetheless, it works quite well already, so tick the box next to "I understand" when you see this message, then press "Continue."From here, make sure the switch next to "Permit to draw over other Apps" is enabled (though it should be already), then tap the toggle switch next to the "Enable Accessibility Service" entry. Next, select Parallel Windows for Nougat from the list, then enable the Accessibility service, and press "OK" on the popup. This will ensure that all of the app's main functionality is in working order.

Step 3: Adjust the Trigger AreaWhen you're done granting permissions, you might want to adjust the trigger area for the app's main interface. This is represented by a red rectangle on the side of your screen, though it turns transparent when you've set everything up. So if you'd like, enter custom values into the "Hotspot dimensions" fields—the first is width, the second is height, and both values represent the number of pixels the trigger area will occupy.

Step 4: Run Two Copies of the Same App Side by SideFrom now on, when you'd like to run two instances of the same app in split-screen mode, start by opening the app you'd like to clone. From here, swipe in from the trigger area on the side of your screen, then tap the topmost icon (the other two icons are shortcuts for existing multitasking functionality).At this point, you'll see a list of all your installed apps—simply select the app you want to clone, then it will occupy the top half of your screen. From here, select the same app from your recent apps list on the bottom half of the screen, then you'll be running two instances of one app in Android Nougat's split screen mode. Extra hardware buttons have become a trend with smartphones lately. Often, these are unmodifiable buttons designed to launch a voice assistant. That isn't the case with the BlackBerry KEY2. Making a return from the KEYone is the Convenience Key, which also received an upgrade.The Convenience Key is a customizable hardware button that can launch virtually anything. Any app or shortcut can be mapped to this button, along with speed dialing or messaging a saved contact. But unlike the KEYone, the KEY2's Convenience Key is smarter. You can now set up profiles with different sets of apps and shortcuts that automatically change based on where you are.

Step 1: Set Up the Default ProfileBefore you can make your Convenience Key contextually aware, you'll need to set it up with some default actions. Head to your phone's main settings menu and select "Shortcuts & gestures." Choose "Convenience key," then select "Add new shortcut" to reveal a popup with all the available actions that you can pull up using the Convenience key. "Open app" allows you to launch an app. "Speed Dial" lets you use the hardware button to call a saved contact (such as a significant other or emergency contact). "Send message" lets you jump right into a new email or text message to a specific contact. "All shortcuts" allows you to launch shortcuts, which are specific actions within the operating system or an app (the app developers create the shortcuts).Once you choose what category you want, follow the instructions to add the action to the button's default profile. As you can see, I decided to turn the Convenience Key into a button version of OnePlus' Alert Slider. By default, each time I press the Convenience Key, the phone switches either to vibrate, mute, or normal ringer.

Step 2: Set Up Contextual ProfilesThe BlackBerry KEY2 has a smart Convenience Key. The intelligence aspect comes from its new ability to handle multiple profiles, allowing for a different arrangement of apps, shortcuts, and contacts based on where you are. These can be automatically activated based on your location using a few different sensors.There are four profiles you can set up: default, car profile, meeting profile, and home profile. The default is already activated and is what you set up in Step 1. To set up the other profiles, select any of the three profiles located along the bottom of the main Convenience Key page in Settings. Choose the profile you wish to set up and repeat Step 1 to add shortcuts, apps, or contacts. Unlike the default profile, you will need to enable the new profile. Select the toggle in the upper-right corner of your display to enable the profile. When enabling the home or car profile, a prompt will be revealed asking you to confirm your choice.The profiles are not activated manually. Instead, they depend on external triggers. For Car Profile, you need to connect your device to your car's Bluetooth. For Home Profile, you need to set up your home Wi-Fi network. As for the Meeting Profile, it's activated at the start time of meetings listed in your calendar (both BlackBerry Calendar and Google Calendar). Once the condition is met, the profile's shortcuts will be activated using the key (or the option if you have more than one shortcut).

Step 3: Try Out Your New ProfilesAfter setting up your profiles, verify that they work. Activate the default profile by disabling Bluetooth and Wi-Fi and pressing the Convenience Key. Once verified, check the car or home profile by either connecting to the designated home Wi-Fi network or connecting to your car's Bluetooth. The Convenience Key should reveal the shortcuts assigned to their corresponding profile, providing you set it up correctly. With the flexibility of the Convenience Key, whatever you need quick access can be one click away. Fortunately, Opera is making this a bit easier.Opera has integrated its VPN service into their mobile browser. This feature, which they already implemented in their desktop browser in 2018, gives you even more protection when on the web. That's because the VPN hides your IP address from websites, hindering the ability of bad actors. Their VPN also encrypts your data, keeping you safe on public Wi-Fi. And it gives you the means to enjoy geo-locked content, even from a different country.

I tested for any leaks and found that neither the DNS nor WebRTC leaked my IPv4 or IPv6. As for speed, it depended on what I set my "Virtual location" to. When I set it to my continent "America," I got an average download speed of 3.42 Mbps and average upload speed of 4.46 Mbps. Without the VPN, I was getting 73.28 Mbps download and 15.34 Mbps upload.However, when I switch to "Optimal," I was able to raise both numbers significantly. An average download speed of 62.98 Mbps and an average upload speed of 14.34 Mbps. Therefore, I recommend using the "Optimal" virtual location unless you are trying to access a specific region's content. (1) With the VPN turned off. (2) With the VPN turned on and "Optimal" virutal location. Opera is claiming this is a no-log service, which means they will not collect any information about your phone while using the service. However, SurfEasy (the VPN service Opera bought in 2018) does use Google Analytics to improve the "service, design, and app experience." How much information this third-party software has access to is unknown at the time.
