How To: Protect Individual Apps on Android That You Can Only Unlock with Your Face
Locking individual apps on your Android device gives you an added layer of security by safeguarding app data from unwanted attention. I personally prefer using an app locker over a standard lock screen because my kids play with my phone, and they've completely disabled it after inputting the wrong PIN. So app lockers give me the right balance between giving my children access to my device, and the security of locking down my data from would-be intruders.We've covered some great app lockers in the past, but those either used a password, PIN, or fingerprint. However, an interesting app called IObit Applock now uses facial recognition as one of its security measures, which makes unlocking your apps as easy as looking at your phone. The app is free, simple to use, and offers a lot of great features, so I'll show you how to set it up below.Don't Miss: How to Lock Any App with Your Fingerprint on Android Marshmallow or Higher

Step 1: Install IObit ApplockTo get this one going, head over to the Google Play Store and download IObit Applock - Face Lock.Install IObit Applock for free from the Google Play Store

Step 2: Create a Password & Grant PermissionsOnce you've downloaded and opened the app, you'll be asked to set an initial password to get the ball rolling. After you've done that, input the email you prefer as a security backup, then tap "Bind." Android 5.0 Lollipop and above requires you to grant IObit Applock permission to access data, so make sure the box next to Allow usage tracking is ticked when the app automatically asks for permission. (1) Set a pattern lock (can be changed later if you like). (2) Input your retrieval email.

Step 3: Enable Device Administrator AccessNow that you've got initial setup out of the way, you should take this time to enable IObit Applock as a device administrator. This will ensure that someone else can't just uninstall IObit Applock to get around its app-locking features.To do that, head to the app's side navigation menu and select "Security Center." Tap on "Avoid Being Uninstalled," and the app will prompt you to enable device administrator access. Select "Activate" on this message, and the app will now need to be disabled by the owner to be uninstalled. (1) Tap "Security Center". (2) Select "Avoid Being Uninstalled". (3) Tap "Activate" to give the app admin permission.

Step 4: Lock Individual Apps & Enable Face ScanningGo back to the main screen and select which apps you want to lock by tapping them in the list. Once you've done that, swipe down to refresh the list. From here, you'll see three icons next to each locked appâ€”to enable face unlocking for any app, simply tap the first of the three icons, then follow the prompts to let IObit Applock scan your face. When you're done there, you can go back and enable the face-locking feature for other apps by tapping the first of the three icons again. (1) Enable app locking by tapping apps in the list. (2) Refresh the list, then tap the first icon to enable face locking. (3) Follow the prompts to scan your face.

Step 5: Unlock Apps Using Your FaceFrom now on, whenever you open one of your locked apps, you'll be greeted by the face scanner. To unlock the app, all you have to do is line your face up with the overlay on the screen, then wait a second or two. However, if anybody else tries to open the app IObit will see that it's not you, then default to the password or PIN lock screen instead. After three failed attempts, you'll even get an email with a picture of the person who attempted to open one of your locked apps! You want to fully saturate the Q-tip, but you don't want it to be dripping wet, so shake off any excess alcohol.From here, use the Q-tip to clean the sides of the stuck button on any surface that sticks out from your phone, working the cotton fibers as far down into the cracks as possible. To be on the safe side, I'd recommend that you turn your phone upside-down while you work so that gravity will prevent any alcohol from seeping into your device. After you've thoroughly cleaned any parts of the stuck button that you can access, give the button a few clicks to help free up any grime that has accumulated.

Step 2: Clean the FrameNow that the button itself is relatively clean, you'll want to clean the part of your gadget that the button protrudes from. This is kind of tricky since the button usually fills this gap entirely, but if you press down on the stuck button, your Q-tip should be able to clean this area more effectively.So hold one side of the button down firmly, then use your alcohol Q-tip to clean the inside of the frame of the device where your button is housed. When you're done, hold down the opposite side of the button, then clean the area that your finger was previously blocking.

Step 3: Blow Debris Away with Canned AirAfter cleaning the button and surrounding frame, grab some canned air and put the nozzle parallel to the stuck button. From here, give it a few quick bursts of air to help free up any remaining debris, but be careful not to blow any dirt or grime down into the device. At this point, your stuck button should already be a lot more "clicky" and easy to use, but you may have to repeat these steps a time or two to clean out all of the dirt and grime. Since early March, iOS users have been able to enjoy the most popular video game sweeping the rounds. Android users have been left envious as they wait for a "few months," the only vague release date given by Epic Games. In the meantime, there are a few ways we can still satisfy our urge to play.After the news that the Android version of Fortnite will likely be exclusive to the Galaxy Note 9 for a month, it's looking like most of us won't be able to play until September at the earliest. Somehow, a few months has turned into half a year now.There are a few games on the Play Store that offer a similar experience to the upcoming Android version of Fortnite Battle Royale that are currently out now. While none of the solutions listed below are a perfect replacement, they will help you get your fingers ready as you wait for the official version to come out.

1. PUBG MobileI expect you might have seen this coming, but the mobile version game that put the battle royale genre on the map is already available on the Play Store. While the game wasn't created by the original developers (PUBG Corporation), it was handled with care by Tencent, who entered a deal with PUBG Corporation to bring the game to the mobile platforms. Tencent Games is also better versed in the mobile space, as demonstrated by their widely successful Arena of Valor.Install PUBG Mobile for free from the Google Play Store Unlike Fortnite, PUBG Mobile offers the ability to use either third-person view or first-person view. There are more weapons that borrow their style and names from real-world counterparts. There's also a more realistic visual look compared to Fortnite's more cartoony look. Additionally, PUBG Mobile lets you configure the graphics settings and frame rate on your device to get the best experience. Trust me when I say there are a lot more differences between PUBG Mobile and Fortnite, but if you want a game with an almost identical gameplay experience, PUBG Mobile is your best bet.

2. Battlelands RoyaleLet me get this out of the way: Battlelands Royale copies a lot of Fortnite Battle Royale. The familiar layout of the lobby, its use of a pass for additional content (which is also called Battle Pass), and its in-game currency (called Battle Bucks) are some of the ways it blatantly rips off Fortnite Battle Royale. But there's one major difference between the two games â€” Battlelands Royale uses an overhead view.Install Battlelands Royale for free from the Google Play Store Reminiscent of the camera view in GTA: Chinatown Wars, Battlelands Royale places the camera above, radically changing how the game is played. With this camera angle, Futureplay had to make some changes to gameplay. First, parachuting is conducted automatically. You pick the location, then you will parachute to that area, with control only returning a few feet above the ground.Second, picking up weapons is automatic and based on a timer. Stand over the weapon and a progress bar will turn green. Once it's filled, you will have collected the weapon. When you pick up the weapon, you will notice that shooting is handled differently as well. Similar to old Contra games, you select and hold in the direction you want to fire, then a line will appear designating both the direction and distance of the bullets. Third, there is no way to hold more than one weapon. Instead, when you move over to a new weapon, you switch to it and lose the old weapon for good. While the gameplay is a bit different, it's certainly similar enough to Fortnite and will at least hold you off for the time being.

3. Stream the PC Version to Your Phone While at HomeIf you don't care for a substitute, you can play the actual game on your phone. Using the app Steam Link, you can connect your phone to your computer and stream the game onto your phone. However, this method does require a bit of work since Fortnite isn't on the Steam Library.You'll need to download the latest beta version of Steam Link on your phone and install the Steam app on your computer (either Windows or macOS). With Steam open on your computer, click "Add a Game" in the bottom-left corner, then choose "Add a Non-Steam Game" from the menu. Assuming you already have Fortnite installed on your computer, you should see Epic Games Launcher. This is the library which contains Fortnite, which needs to be added to your Steam library.Install Steam Link (BETA) for free from the Google Play Store With Fortnite Battle Royale added, make sure your phone is on the same local network as your computer (preferably, your computer should be on using Ethernet for the best connection). Follow the instructions in the Steam Link Beta app and connect your phone to your computer. Once connected, select "Start Playing" to begin the link. Select "Library" and locate Epic Games Launcher. Here is where you'll find Fortnite, which you can select to begin playing. I would strongly recommend using a controller. You can check this list to see if your controller of choice supports Steam Link. Please note that because it isn't optimized for Steam Link, Fortnite's default controls aren't the greatest and should be changed in the game's settings for the best experience.Don't Miss: How to Connect Your Steam Controller to Steam Link for Android Additionally, this method does require you to be at the same location as your computer, as it mirrors your desktop's screen onto your phone. The performance of the game is completely dependent on your computer, so while you can run this using an old laptop, for the best experience, use a gaming PC.

4. Play the PC Version on the GoThere is another solution for those wanting to play the actual game (at least the PC version) on their Android device. Vortex Cloud Gaming is a cloud service that lets you stream the game from the app's servers to your Chrome browser or Android device. Since it streams the game, you can run it either on your Wi-Fi network or cellular data. We would recommend sticking with Wi-Fi as latency will become a problem on LTE.Install Vortex Cloud Gaming for free from the Google Play Store There is no installation or downloading needed to play game since the entirety of the game is run from their servers. Instead, once you have the app, you can select the game you want and start enjoying.There is a $9.99 monthly subscription, and there is no free trial. However, we would recommend that if you're interested, run the app's ping test on your network before signing up to make sure you have strong enough connection and minimal latency. Each one of these methods will bring the addictive battle royale experience to your Android device.
