How To: Enable Apple's True Dark Mode in iOS 13 for iPhone

How To: Enable Apple's True Dark Mode in iOS 13 for iPhone

While the Smart Invert feature was an excellent first step toward a dark mode, it's nowhere near what a true dark mode should be for iPhone. After years of rumors and disappointment, Apple finally has the dark mode everyone's been wanting, and it's one of the biggest new features in iOS 13.Dark modes have gained popularity with app developers — big names like Gboard, Google Maps, Messenger, Slack, Twitter, and YouTube already have it. But there are still a ton of iOS apps that don't, and Apple can help solve that issue with its built-in Dark Mode. Apple has been promoting iOS apps that "look great in dark mode," and it even included a real dark mode in macOS Mojave that helps users focus on their work, so the signs were all there that iOS 13 was destined for the feature.Don't Miss: Lower Screen Brightness Below the Default Level on Your iPhone
The Benefits of Dark Mode on iPhoneApple's Night Shift helps keep sleep-preventing blue lights at bay, but dark modes, sometimes called night modes, are another option for people who don't dig the yellow hue that Night Shift emits. There may be some blue lights to deal with in dark modes, but it's easier to see items as they should be on the screen, and you can lower the brightness of the display with the Low Light filter and Reduce White Point setting.Dark modes also have other benefits. It looks better, depending on your preferences, that bright white pages. And it can help save a little battery, especially on devices with OLED displays, such as the iPhone X, XS, and XS Max. While there is some battery improvement on other iPhone models, OLED models will see the most significant battery improvement because the pixels won't need to be lit up at all for black areas, and they won't need to use the full RGB spectrum for gray areas.

How to Enable Dark Mode on iPhone via Control CenterTo use Dark Mode on your iPhone in iOS 13, open up the Control Center. Next, long-press the display brightness control, and you'll see a new "Appearance Light" button. Tap that to enable Dark Mode, which will turn the button into "Appearance Dark." It would be better if the Dark Mode were its own control, so you don't have to do extra tapping, but it's better than nothing. Here's a before-and-after look at the App Store:

How to Enable Dark Mode on iPhone via SettingsIf you're not a fan of the Control Center, you can also access Dark Mode via the Settings app. Open it up, then tap "Display & Brightness." Right away, you'll see the Appearance section up top. Simply check "Dark" instead of "Light" to get the dark view.

How to Schedule Dark Mode on iPhoneDark mode can also be scheduled, so you can turn it on automatically at sunset, the default option, or at any custom time you want. You can also set a time for it to go back to Light Mode at sunrise, the default, or whatever time you need it to be bright white again. In the "Display & Brightness" settings, tap on the toggle next to "Automatic." It will automatically set it to "Sunset to Sunrise," but you can change by tapping the "Options" item. On the Appearance Schedule screen, tap "Custom Schedule," and you can adjust the times individually for "Light Appearance" and "Dark Appearance." When activating a schedule, you can still enable or disable Dark Mode in the Control Center. However, the buttons will not either say "Appearance Light Until Sunset" or "Appearance Dark Until Sunrise." When you manually change to Light or Dark Mode from here, the schedule will stay in place, and you'll just be shortening or lengthening the scheduled times for one of the appearances. How To: Get More Out of Your Apple EarPods with These Tricks

How To: Get More Out of Your Apple EarPods with These Tricks
Whenever you buy a newer iPhone model, you get a set of Apple EarPods with remote and microphone built-in. Aside from their comfortable design and high-quality sound they provide, these headphones offer additional functionality beyond just pausing and playing music.Below is the complete list of things you can use your Apple-branded headphones for on an iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch, whether they're EarPods, In-Ear Headphones, or just regular Earphones (previously called Earbuds). The only requirement is that they have to have a remote and mic. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.

Playback ControlsWhen it comes to headphones, you're most likely using them to listen to music or videos without bothering those around you, and the remote on your Apple set can do pretty much anything you need in that regard. In this guide, I'm focusing on the newer EarPods with remote and mic, but again, any Apple-branded headphones with remote and mic will do. Note: Using the volume up and down buttons will work universally across all Apple devices, no matter which app you're in, so let's leave it at that.
1. Pause & Play TracksYou most likely already know how to play and pause things, but let's get that out of the way first. To play or pause a song or video, just press the center button once. This should work with most apps on your iOS device, like Music, Netflix, Play Music, Spotify, Videos, and YouTube, but some third-party apps won't play nice. For instance, you can pause a video in HBO GO, Play Movies, and Showtime Anytime (with some serious lag) using the center button, but you can't resume play with it.
2. Skip or Go to Previous TrackTo skip a track, quickly press the middle button on the remote twice. To go to the previous track, quickly press the middle button three times. This trick works with a lot of media apps, like Music, Pandora, Play Music, Spotify, and Videos, but won't work in Netflix, HBO GO, Play Movies, or Showtime Anytime. In the YouTube app, pressing twice or thrice just reloads the current video.
3. Fast Forward & RewindIn order to fast forward to your favorite part of a song or video, press the middle button twice, holding down on the second press. To rewind a track or video, press the middle button three times, holding down on the third press. This works in Music, Spotify, and Videos, but not in HBO GO, Netflix, Pandora, Play Movies, Play Music, Showtime Anytime, or YouTube. Other apps may work or not.

Call FunctionsChances are, you'll inevitably receive a phone call while your headphones are plugged in, and while you can pull your iPhone out to perform call functions, let's show you how to do them all from your EarPod's remote.
4. Answer & End CallsWhen you receive a call you want to accept, simply press the middle button once on the remote. Hanging up the call is also done with a single-press of the middle button.
5. Decline Incoming CallsTo decline a call, press and hold the middle button for a couple seconds. The beeps you hear afterward will notify you that the call was forwarded to voicemail. If you're already in a phone call and receive another, you can do the same thing to decline the new one.
6. Switch to a Second CallIf you're already in a phone call and receive another, you can switch to the new one while placing the previous one on hold by single-pressing the middle button.

Additional FunctionsAlthough playback controls and call functions will probably be the most utilized functions, there are some additional things that can make your EarPods much more useful.
7. Activate Siri for Hands-Free AssistanceWhen you have a query for Siri, activating her with the headphone's remote is quickly done by pressing and holding the middle button. If your remote includes a mic (you'll know by the small microphone icon on the back), you can leave your phone in your pocket while you speak to Siri. This is also a good "call function," since you can just ask Siri to call someone for you.
8. Use It as a Remote Shutter ButtonWith your headphones plugged in and your Camera app open, use the volume buttons on the EarPods remote to snap pictures or start and stop video recordings. It makes getting difficult angles more easily. Unfortunately, this action does not work with third-party apps like Instagram, Snapchat, or Vine.
9. Use Them with Your MacNot all of the functions mentioned above can be performed on your MacBook or Mac desktop computer, but if you plug your headphones into it, you will be able to raise the volume, pause and play tracks, and even skip a track or go back to the previous one in certain applications.
Bonus TipsThe following tips for Apple-branded headphones with remote and mic are still very useful, they're just very exclusive or may be less utilized than the other every-day functions mentioned above.
10. Use It as a Mic for Better Video AudioIf you're making a video and need to grab some audio, you can strategically place the mic somewhere (in a collar or shirt) and use the Voice Memos app to grab the audio and sync it up with your video later. However, you cannot start or stop recordings with the remote buttons—only via your device's touchscreen.
11. Activate VoiceOverVoiceOver is a feature that lets you hear the names of songs, artists, and playlists via your headphones when using the Music app. This feature will work with any headphones—with or without a remote. Additionally, if you have a remote and mic, you can use VoiceOver to navigate your iTunes playlists by speaking. If you have an iPod shuffle (3rd or 4th gen) or iPad nano (5th or 6th gen), you need to enable the VoiceOver Kit in iTunes and sync your device. If you have an iPod touch (3rd gen or higher), iPod nano (6th gen or higher), or iPhone (3GS or higher), VoiceOver is already included in your iOS settings.
Third-Party CompatibilityIf your Apple-branded headphones stop working, are lost, or if you never received any with your Apple purchase, some of the features listed above will work with third-party headphones with a remote and mic. Additionally, you can purchase a remote and mic adapter like this or this to add it to an existing pair of headphones.Did we miss any tricks? Let us know in the comments below. And if you find that your EarPods don't fit well in your ears, a little Sugru could help. As always, keep up with Gadget Hacks over on Facebook, Google+, and Twitter for more Apple tips.

News: Save Money on Hulu by Picking the Plan That's Right for You

News: Save Money on Hulu by Picking the Plan That's Right for You
Hulu used to be simple — just a site with all the latest clips and episodes from your favorite shows. Watch some ads, watch some free TV. Easy, right? Not so much anymore. Hulu is no longer free, and on top of that, offers different pricing plans and add-ons.So what plan should you choose? That depends on your situation. You'll have to consider how many people will use the account, if you can tolerate ads, if you're looking for premium channels like HBO, Cinemax, Showtime, or Starz. It can be overwhelming. Lucky for you, this article will walk you through each option. By the time you finish reading, you'll be ready to pick a plan and get watching on your preferred iOS or Android device.Don't Miss: The 4 Best Phones for Binge-Watching Netflix & Hulu

Option 1: HuluFirst, we have the base plan, something Hulu used to call the "Limited Commercials" plan. Choosing this plan means sitting through commercial breaks on every show. According to Hulu, expect to see about nine minutes of ads per hour (2/3 the 16 minutes of ads on network TV). That may or may not sound like a lot to you, but it could feel like a lot.Hulu's ads are also ridiculously repetitive at times. You may see the same few ads recycled over that nine minutes per hour. By the end of one episode, you just might be pulling your hair out. But this is also an issue with other ad-supported streaming services, so you can't really blame Hulu. Why subjugate yourself to this torturous experience? Price. The regular Hulu base plan with ads is $5.99 a month, Hulu's cheapest offering. Plus, it comes with a one-month free trial. With Hulu, you get access to full seasons of exclusive series, classic shows from years past, Hulu Originals (like Handmaid's Tale), access to Hulu's full movie library, and more.Try Out One Month of Hulu for Free ($5.99/Month After)

Option 2: Hulu (No Ads)Hulu's second main option — and one you may see advertised more than the base plan — is its No Ads plan. At $11.99 a month, your wallet may be a tad lighter than you'd like, but you'll be free of repetitive and annoying advertisements, for the most part.Hulu admits that due to streaming rights, certain shows will still display ads, even if you pay extra for the No Ads experience. Because that makes sense, right? When I hear "No Ads" or "No Commercials," I expect some of what I watch to contain ads still. That's how English works, no?Sarcasm aside, the No Ads plan should be the limited commercials subscription, while the current Hulu base plan should be called "Boat-Load of Ads." I'm just trying to keep it real here, Hulu. For those curious, the current line-up of shows that will still stream with commercials are Grey's Anatomy, Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., and How To Get Away with Murder. If you don't watch any of those shows, feel free to ignore the above rant.Like the base plan, Hulu (No Ads) also comes with a one-month free trial. Similarly, you get access to full seasons of exclusive series, classic shows from years past, Hulu Originals (like Handmaid's Tale), access to Hulu's full movie library, and more.Try Out One Month of Hulu (No Ads) for Free ($11.99/Month After)

Option 3: Hulu + Live TVHulu + Live TV is Hulu's answer to, well, live TV. For $44.99 a month, you receive Hulu's entire streaming library with ads. You get everything that's in Option 1 above with the addition of an extensive list of live cable TV channels that range from CBS, NBC, ABC, and affiliates like CNBC, Freeform, and MSNBC, to channels like AMC, FX, TNT, and USA. The subscription comes with sports channels as well and gives 50 hours of Cloud DVR storage. If you're looking for a more straightforward cable setup, this plan may be right for you. It's $33 more a month than Hulu's No Ads plan and $39 more than Hulu's base plan, so if you were going to pair Hulu with your current cable provider anyway, there might be some savings here. If you aren't interested in many of the channels offered, however, or don't mind waiting a day to watch your favorite shows, you might not need Live TV on top of a Hulu base or No Ads streaming subscription.A new subscription comes with a seven-day free trial, and I feel it's necessary to be repetitive and remind you that there are commercials on both Hulu's regular streaming options and Live TV channels.Try Out One Week of Hulu + Live TV for Free ($44.99/Month After)
Option 4: Hulu (No Ads) + Live TVA plan without commercials is also available for Hulu + Live TV for only four dollars more a month. So that's $50.99 per month. The same restrictions from Hulu's standard commercial-free streaming subscription (Option 2) apply here. However, note that all live channels are still filled with ads like a regular cable subscription, just like with the Option 3 above. There is no way to get rid of ads on Live TV. A free seven-day trial is available.Try Out One Week of Hulu + Live TV for Free ($44.99/Month After)
Option 5: Live TV OnlyIf you don't care about watching old content beyond what's in your DVR storage, then you probably don't want any of the four options above. Live TV Only is the plan for you. All of the same features of Live TV in Option 3 and 4 apply here, only you don't get Hulu's standard base plan or its No Ads version. Like the name states, this is strictly Live TV with Cloud DVR storage. However, with the omission of the regular Hulu streaming options, you will not get any access to full seasons of exclusive series, classic shows from years past, Hulu Originals (so no Handmaid's Tale), access to Hulu's full movie library, and more. The plan is $43.99 per month and does not come with a trial.Subscribe to Live TV via Hulu for $43.99/Month
Option 6: Spotify Premium for Students + Hulu & ShowtimeIf you're a college student and don't mind advertisements, don't waste your money on Option 1 above. Instead, sign up for Spotify Premium for Students, which comes with the standard Hulu plan and Showtime for just $4.99 a month. Even better, first-time users get an introductory price of $0.99 a month for the first three months. However, this needs to be your first time signing up for Spotify Premium to qualify for the cheap rate. While your Hulu plan will come with ads this way, it's likely Spotify Premium and Showtime are more than enough to make up for it. If you want to watch live television programs, you can sign up for Option 5 above to get Live TV Only for $43.99 per month. Total, that would be $48.98 each month for Hulu, Live TV Only, Showtime, and Spotify. Conditions apply.More Info: Snag Hulu & Showtime With Spotify Premium for Just $5 a Month

Add-Ons Available for Any Hulu SubscriptionsHulu offers add-ons to any of the above subscriptions except the student plan. If you subscribe to Options 1 through 4 above, you can choose from premium channels like HBO ($14.99/month), Cinemax ($9.99/month), Showtime ($10.99/month), and Starz ($8.99/month). If you've wanted to check out the shows with any of these outlets, it's not a bad deal.If you subscribe to Options 3 through 5, for $9.99 per month each, Hulu offers Enhanced Cloud DVR, which expands storage limits to 200 hours, as well as an Unlimited Screens option, which allows an unlimited amount of devices to be streaming while at home but only three "on-the-go." Again with the misleading language, Hulu. You can get both features for $14.98 per month combined. There's also an Entertainment Add-on for $7.99 each month that gives you more channels. So, that's Hulu in a nutshell. Whether you're looking for a way to replace your current cable plan, or you just want to watch that interesting Hulu Original everyone's talking about, there's a plan for you.Which plan works best for you? How To: Copy, Share & Search Text from Almost Anywhere in Chrome on Android

How To: Copy, Share & Search Text from Almost Anywhere in Chrome on Android
Chrome's text selection interface is pretty nice, but it could definitely use some improvements. For instance, when you're in Incognito Mode, you can't perform a web search for words you've highlighted. And when you're typing out a forum post or using any text input field, for that matter, there's no option to search or share any of the text you've written.Developer PunchUp wanted to fix these issues, so he created an Xposed module that will remove these restrictions and let you search, copy, or share text from almost anywhere in Chrome. It also comes with the added benefit of being able to share links directly from the long-press context menu, so your browsing experience gets improved across the board.Don't Miss: Speed Hacks That'll Make Chrome Blazing Fast

Step 2: Copy, Share & Search Text from Almost Anywhere in ChromeWhen you get back up, no further setup is needed—you'll simply be able to copy, share, and search text from more fields in Chrome. How To: Tweak System Settings & Activate Hidden Features in Yosemite with TinkerTool
Most diehard Mac users have used TinkerTool at some time or another, and if you haven't, it's time to start. Whether it's to change your system's font or to disable UI animations, it seems like anything you could ever think about tweaking in Mac OS X is doable through TinkerTool. And now, developer Marcel Bresink has updated his app to work with Yosemite, so let's see what it can do now. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.
Installing TinkerTool on Your MacTinkerTool is not available in the Mac App Store, but you can download it from Bresink's website here. It downloads as a DMG file, so after it finishes downloading, open it, accept the terms, then drag it into your "Applications" folder. If you ran into issues opening it, make sure that your security settings are set to allow third-party app installs from outside the Mac App Store before attempting to open TinkerTool again. There are a ton of options within this app, so follow along with me below as I cover the important ones, then feel free to explore on your own.

Tweaking Your FinderThere are a few options that can be enabled to change up how Finder functions, like showing hidden files and adding a "Quit" option to the menu. You can also change some UI elements as well, like disabling animations and sound effects. After enabling any option, you will need to click on "Relaunch Finder" to see them take effect.

Tweaking Your DockThe Dock options are mostly aesthetic changes that will alter the appearance of hidden, stacked, or active apps. You can also restrict apps from being removed from the Dock, which should be an option that every Apple Store should add to their display units.

Tweaking General SettingsIn this section, you will be able to modify features that are available system wide, such as scrolling effects, power button press actions, and screenshot format. There is also an option to limit the amount of entries in the recent items menu to further protect your privacy.

Tweaking Your ApplicationsThe Applications menu covers some of Apple's main utilities. You can add a diagnostic or debug menu to the Contacts, Terminal, Disk Utility, or App Store apps. There's also the useful option to allow copy operations when using "Quick Look" on a document. The rest of the apps options for Safari, iTunes, and QuickTime allow general UI changes, such as disabling the title bar when playing a video.

Tweaking System FontsPersonally, I don't mind Helvetica, but if you're tired of the same old font, you can change it to any other font you have installed on your computer. Fully exploring TinkerTool will take some time, but if you put in the effort, you can truly turn your Mac into a tailor-made machine. You can also revert back to pre-TinkerTool settings using the "Reset" option.Let us know your favorite options in the comments below, and make sure to follow us on Facebook and Twitter to stay up to date on more Mac hacks.

How To: Planning on Buying an iPhone 5? Here's How to Get the Most Money for Your Old iPhone 4 or 4S

How To: Planning on Buying an iPhone 5? Here's How to Get the Most Money for Your Old iPhone 4 or 4S

Apple is notoriously cryptic when it comes to the reveals of its new products, and as usual, they've kept us guessing about the release of the iPhone 5 (or "New iPhone?"). It's expected to be officially revealed on September 12, and rumor has it that sales will begin on the 21st. Though the whole world seems to be anxiously awaiting the announcement, there has also been some controversy surrounding the iPhone 5's production. With the high number of suicides and poor working conditions at Foxconn, Apple's largest supplier, to the recent allegations that students at China's Huaiyin Institute of Technology were forced to leave class to work on the iPhone 5, some people won't buy it because of moral opposition. There have, however, been reports that working conditions at Foxconn have improved as of the most recent audit (requested by Apple itself). Image via idigitaltimes.com There are a lot of factors to consider, both financial and otherwise, but if you are planning on ditching your iPhone 4 or 4S in favor of the new one, you have quite a few options to get rid of it. Some are quick and convenient, but offer less money. Others get you more cash, but may not be 100% guaranteed or could require a little more waiting. To save you some time and figure out what works best for you, here are a few ways to sell your old iPhone, and what to expect with each one.

Before You SellThere are a few things you'll want to do before selling your iPhone to protect your privacy. Be sure to wipe all the data so you don't have someone looking through all your photos and text messages. You should also disassociate your number with the phone so the buyer can't make calls on your line. If you use AT&T or T-Mobile, all you need to do is remove the SIM card. For Verizon and Sprint, you can call them and ask them to deactivate it for you, or, if you've already gotten your new phone, just transfer the number over to it (or any old phone you have lying around) and it will automatically be removed from your old one. And you should remove your Apple ID from the phone before getting rid of it. To do this, open iTunes and sign in to your account. Under Store on the main menu, click on View My Account. Click on Manage Devices, then the Remove button next to the device you want to delete.Another thing to consider is that unlocked and jailbroken iPhones sometimes fetch a higher price, so it may not be a bad idea if you want to make a few extra bucks.

Option 1: Sell Your iPhone to a Buy-Back SiteSure, you can always sell your phone on Craigslist, but if you don't want to go through the hassle of listing it, there's no shortage of sites that will buy your old gadgets and resell them to other customers.
NextWorthNextWorth gives you the option of selling online or in one of almost 1,500 Target stores to make the process faster. They'll pay you via PayPal, or you can have a check or gift card from a participating retailer mailed to you. The amount differs depending on what model you have and which condition it's in, but if it's functional and the screen isn't cracked, here's a few examples of what you'll get:iPhone 4S - Black or White (16GB)Verizon: $245 AT&T: $300 iPhone 4S - Black or White (32GB)Verizon: $260 AT&T: $305 iPhone 4 - Black or White (16GB)Verizon: $148 AT&T: $155 iPhone 4 - Black or White (32GB)Verizon: $158 AT&T: $170
GazelleGazelle has free shipping and will pay you with a check or an Amazon or PayPal card. Here's what they're offering for iPhones as of right now:iPhone 4S - Black or White (16GB)Verizon: $241 (flawless) / $228 (good) / $85 (broken) AT&T: $290 (flawless) / $277 (good) / $85 (broken) iPhone 4S - Black or White (32GB)Verizon: $257 (flawless) / $237 (good) / $90 (broken) AT&T: $295 (flawless) / $280 (good) / $95 (broken) iPhone 4 - Black or White (16GB)Verizon: $161 (flawless) / $141 (good) / $45 (broken) AT&T: $160 (flawless) / $146 (good) / $55 (broken) iPhone 4 - Black or White (32GB)Verizon: $174 (flawless) / $154 (good) / $45 (broken) AT&T: $173 (flawless) / $159 (good) / $55 (broken)
GlydeGlyde gives higher offers than NextWorth and Gazelle, but your item isn't guaranteed to sell. They do give you the option of taking less money for a guaranteed immediate sale, though. Their prices are the same for Verizon and AT&T phones, and as long as your phone is in good condition and has the charger with it, here's what they'll give you for it:iPhone 4S - Black or White (16GB)List: up to $325 Sell now: $266 iPhone 4S - Black or White (32GB)List: up to $352 Sell now: $288 iPhone 4 - Black or White (16GB)List: up to $233 Sell now: $173 iPhone 4 - Black or White (32GB)List: up to $239 Sell now: $185

Option 2: Sell Back to a Retailer or Cellular ProviderIf you plan on buying the new iPhone through your cellular provider, you can trade in your old one to knock down the price (if it's in good condition). You can also do this at Radio Shack or Apple for a gift card towards your new phone. Image via rossross.com
VerizonHead on over to Verizon and you'll see the following prices:iPhone 4S (16GB): $230 max iPhone 4S (32GB): $220 max iPhone 4 (16GB): $140 max iPhone 4 (32GB): $150 max Unfortunately, that's not a typo above. For some reason, Verizon's website says they actually pay more for the 16GB version of the iPhone 4S than the 32GB one.
AT&TAT&T will also let you trade in your iPhone for an AT&T Promotion Card, but you have to go into the store to do it.
SprintSprint will take an iPhone from any provider, but they offer a little more if you're trading in one of their own phones:iPhone 4S (16GB): $253 max iPhone 4S (32GB): $266 max iPhone 4 (16GB): $150 max iPhone 4 (32GB): $160 max
AppleHead on over to Apple's Reuse and Recycling program and you'll see:4S: $285 to $345, depending on storage capacity 4: $155 to $185

Option 3: List It YourselfIf you want to go the old-fashioned route, you can always just list your phone on Craigslist, Amazon, or eBay. These sites can be a little more of a hassle, but if you're patient (and savvy), they can end up paying off in the long run.
CraigslistThe biggest downside to Craigslist is that prices are all over the place, and people often like to haggle with you rather than just pay the price you listed. But if you think your iPhone is worth more than other sites are willing to give you, Craigslist is one of the more convenient ways to sell it because it's easy, you can choose whatever price you want, and since it's local, you won't have to ship it anywhere once you find a buyer. For the iPhone 4, the average starting price is $200 to $250, even for the 8GB, and can reach up to $350 or $400 for a brand new one with higher storage capacity. A 32 or 64GB iPhone 4S can get you up to $500 or even $600 if it's in good condition.
Amazon.comYou can also list your phone on Amazon, but if you want to make it quick, try their Electronics Trade-In program.Depending on the condition, here's what they're offering:iPhone 4 (8GB): up to $230 iPhone 4 (16GB): up to $270 iPhone 4 (32 GB): up to $300 iPhone 4S (8GB): up to $420 iPhone 4S (16GB): up to $455 iPhone 4S (64GB): up to $500 You'll only get the maximum price if your phone is like new, and the downside to this is that you get paid with an Amazon gift card, but if you plan on buying your new phone from Amazon, or order a lot off the site anyway, the higher prices could be worth it.
eBayAgain, like the other two sites, listing your item on eBay gets you no guarantees, but you can use their Instant Sale promotion to cash in your old phone and get an instant PayPal credit (once the phone is received). Here's what the current prices look like:iPhone 4 (8GB): up to $170 iPhone 4 (16GB): up to $180 iPhone 4 (32 GB): up to $235 iPhone 4S (8GB): up to $300 iPhone 4S (16GB): up to $315 iPhone 4S (64GB): up to $400 If you don't want the Instant Sale price, see what people are paying for them in auctions by searching for your model and then refining by "Completed Listings" to see what's selling for what.As you can see, there are tons of places to sell your old iPhone, and whether your main concern is getting the most money or selling it quickly, there's something for just about everyone. Are you getting the new iPhone? How do you plan on selling your old one? If you already did, tell us about your experience. If you don't want to sell your iPhone, you can still use it for a number of other things. Check out these 11 cool reuses for your old iPhone.

How To: Make Your Nexus 7 Help You Fall Asleep at Night Instead of Keep You Up

Are you staying up longer than you want to? Do you fidget with your tablet late at night before bed? Maybe you're using it to read or to watch something to help you knock out. If so, this may actually be keeping you up.Studies have shown that exposure to blue light before sleep may distort your natural circadian rhythm and cause inability to fall asleep. Luckily for us, the developers behind a free app called Twilight have figured out how to help us addicted Android users get some rest. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.
What the app does is mimics the time of day and gradually filters out the blue light in your tablet with a soft, red filter, which is supposed to help you fall asleep. If you're interested in the science behind it, just look under the extensive description on the Google Play page by the Urbandroid Team before you download it—interesting stuff. Sun & LocationThis is something I wouldn't adjust, unless maybe you're traveling. The default location is your own and adjusting it is a pain in the ass. Getting that red dot back to your location is difficult.
Pause in Specified AppsSelect the Auto-pause in specified apps option to choose which apps run this filter and which don't.

Stop from Status BarBy checking the Hide from status bar option you will enable a shortcut in the notification bar which will allow you to pause the app quickly whenever you want.

Other OptionsStart on boot can is self-explanatory: it starts whenever your device restarts. Fullscreen mode will allow the filter to encompass the status bar as well.

Do You Need the Pro Version?Like many free apps, the pro version is mostly just a donation, though you do get some extra features with this one. Some of these include setting a custom sunrise and sunset, choosing a custom time, and setting the transition time to longer than 90 minutes. The free version is perfect as is for me. I saw no need to upgrade, but if you'd like to support the developers efforts, or like some of these additional features, go pro (currently $2.49).Hopefully this will give your eyes a break and let you catch some extra Zs. If you have any issues or want to let us know what you think, hit up the comments below.

How To: Newly Rooted? Install "Touch" Recovery on Your Samsung Galaxy S3 to Easily Flash ROMs & Mods

How To: Newly Rooted? Install "Touch" Recovery on Your Samsung Galaxy S3 to Easily Flash ROMs & Mods

The advantages of rooting have been covered before, and with rooting comes flashing ROMs and mods to your device. The easiest method for flashing anything is to do it through recovery.Recovery is the bootable portion of the phone's system that allows data wipes and system updates. At its core, the stock recovery is fairly limited in the functions they can perform. This is where custom recoveries come in to play.A custom recovery will allow you to flash ROMs, mods, themes, etc. You can also back up your entire system, partition internal and external memory, wipe various parts of your device, and more. Most root methods will lead you to installing ClockWorkMod (CWM) recovery. CWM is easily the most popular recovery out there, but the version that comes with most root methods is dated, still utilizing the volume and power buttons for navigation.About a year ago, a new custom recovery hit the scene, Team Win's Recovery Project (TWRP). GS3 SoftModder forum member Scott asked how to install TWRP, and this guide will show just how to do it. According to Team Win, TWRP "started from the ground up by taking AOSP recovery and loading it with the standard recovery options, then added a lot of our own features. It's a fully touch-driven user interface—no more volume rocker or power buttons to mash."The touch interface is a real game changer, and while other touch recovery's exist, TWRP is the easiest and most stable for our Samsung Galaxy S3's. Let's walk through the installation process.
What You Will NeedRooted GS3 For method #1, Goo Manager For method #2, your device specific .tar file (choose one below) AT&T - d2att Canada - d2can Cricket - d2cri International - i9300 International - i9305 Metro PCS - d2mtr Sprint - d2spr T-Mobile USA - d2tmo US Cellular - d2usc Verizon - d2vzw
Method #1: Install TWRP Using GooManagerThis is by far the simplest way to get TWRP on to your Samsung Galaxy S3—install GooManager and have it download, install, and reboot your device. Done.

Step 1: Open GooManager and Go to Install ScreenOpen the app, press the Menu key, and select "Install OpenRecoveryScript".

Step 2: Follows Prompts to InstallA couple of button presses, and you are done! Your app will now download the appropriate file for your device, install the recovery, and reboot.

Method #2: Install TWRP Using OdinFor a rundown on how to use Odin, check out this guide.
Step 1: Prepare Odin for FlashMake sure Auto Reboot and F. Reset are checked, then click the PDA button and load your .tar file.

Step 2: Go into Download Mode on Your GS3If you are on a custom ROM, you can do this by holding the Power button, select Reboot, and select Download Mode. You can also do this by powering off your phone, and power back on by holding Volume Down + Home + Power.
Step 3: Flash TWRPPress the Start button on Odin. Then watch your phone do its thing and reboot. That's it, you now have the latest and greatest recovery available for the Samsung Galaxy S3.

News: iOS 11.2 Released to the Masses with Bug Fixes, Apple Pay Cash & More New Features

News: iOS 11.2 Released to the Masses with Bug Fixes, Apple Pay Cash & More New Features

It's been a busy week for Apple. After two beta updates in one week, iOS 11.2 was released to the public around 1:30 a.m. PT on Saturday, Dec. 2. Usually, Apple releases updates around 10 a.m. PT, but this one was rushed in the wake of a huge time/date bug that was causing some iPhones to crash on Dec. 2 once 12:15 a.m. local time hit. But bug fixes aren't the only thing in this new iOS version. As we've seen in some of the iOS 11.2 betas, the final release hitting your iPhone includes many new features, the biggest being Apple Pay Cash, which can be used to pay for purchases online and in-stores, as well as be sent and received from friends and family members directly in the Messages app. While the feature has been pushed in iOS 11.2, not everyone has access to it yet, so be patient as it rolls out over the next week.Other big changes include support for fast wireless charging on the iPhone 8, 8 Plus, and X, a fix for the laggy Calculator app, a "Live Sports" tab appearing in the TV app, a few tweaked emoji, and new wallpapers for everyone. For a full list of the new features, check out our iOS 11.2 features roundup.More Info: 20 Cool New Features in iOS 11.2 for iPhone To get the update on your iPhone, just open the Setting app, tap on "General," then "Software Update." How To: The 5 Best Hidden Safari Features in iOS 8 for Your iPhone

How To: The 5 Best Hidden Safari Features in iOS 8 for Your iPhone
Apple's new iOS 8 has a ton of new features, and so does their revamped Safari app, only some of the features aren't quite as obvious as others. In this guide, I'll show you my 5 favorite Safari secrets in iOS 8 for your iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.

You Can Access Recently Closed Tabs FasterUnintentionally closing a tab in Safari could be as simple as the slip of a finger. Apple now makes it easy to retrieve closed tabs in iOS 8—just hold down on the + (plus sign) and a Recently Closed Tabs page will appear. This is much faster than the iOS 7 way, in which you tap on the bookmarks icon from the main toolbar and select your History.
You Can Request the Desktop Site for Any WebpageRequesting the desktop version of a specific websites is something that's been baked into Google's Chrome web browser for a long time. Now, Apple has added the same feature to Safari in iOS 8.Simply tap on the URL of the website you want in desktop version, swipe the screen of the Safari homepage down, then tap on Request Desktop Site. You'll be redirected back to your current website, in desktop fashion. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.
In iOS 7, the only way to do this in Safari is by using the website's own "Full Site" or "Desktop Site" link on their webpage—if they even have one.

You Can Create a Separate Window for Private BrowsingInstead of switching your entire browser to private mode, iOS 8 now has its own private mode page.Tapping on Private Mode in Safari will take you to another page separate from the regular browser, where you can browse anonymously. Once you're done, you can switch back to the regular browser (where your other tabs are), with the option to either close or keep all of your private tabs. Again, in iOS 7, hitting the Private option is for all tabs in your current window—it does not create separate windows.
You Can Input Credit Card Info Faster with the CameraWhen you tap a text box to enter your credit card number, the keyboard in Safari will prompt you with the option to Scan Credit Card. Safari will then use your camera, and you'll need to position your card in the frame for it to successfully pull the information. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.
In iOS 7, if you have Credit Cards enabled in the Passwords & AutoFill section of your Safari settings, you will be able to select saved cards to fill the information with, which you can also do in iOS 8—but you cannot take pictures of cards.
You Can Browse Safely with No TrackingKnown for its no-tracking privacy policy, DuckDuckGo is now available as a default search engine for Safari. Just go to Settings -> Safari -> Search Engine, and you'll see DuckDuckGo at the bottom. Go back to Safari to peruse the DuckDuckGo search engine, which is noticeably void of tracking habits and personalized search results. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.
In iOS 7, your only option is to disable a few tracking options in your settings, and the only search engines to choose from are Google, Yahoo, and Bing.So there you have it, five new and hidden features in Safari for iOS 8. Have you noticed others? Let us know in the comments below.

How To: Hide All Traces of Your Apps & Pictures on Android

How To: Hide All Traces of Your Apps & Pictures on Android
Unlike some of the popular app lockers out there, a new app called PrivateMe completely erases apps, files, and their associated footprints from your smartphone. Think of PrivateMe as a micro-OS within your smartphone's system. This miniature ecosystem can operate copied apps independently, thus giving it an unprecedented layer of privacy and freedom within your handset.App lockers can also arouse suspicion, and may make your significant other wonder why you'd need to require a PIN for your gallery or other files. Since PrivateMe completely removes files from your normal OS, and isolates them in their own secure environment, it truly keeps your sensitive data out of sight and out of mind. Here's a guide to quickly set up and get the ball rolling with this nifty privacy app.Don't Miss: How to Tell if Your Android Has Been Hacked (& What You Can Do About It)

Step 1: Install PrivateMeFirst thing we'll need to do is download PrivateMe, so just head over to the Play Store to install the app.Install PrivateMe for free from the Google Play Store

Step 2: Hide & Clone AppsPrivateMe is incredibly easy to set up. To get started, simply open the app, and tap on the + symbol in the upper-right corner to add apps that you want to hide. Once you've added an app, PrivateMe will proceed to install and clone it within its system. You can now delete the app from your regular system if you want to keep it private. You can also opt to keep both, which would give you the ability to run two different accounts on the same app, like running work and personal accounts for Facebook and other apps.Don't Miss: Another Way You Can Clone Apps on Android

Step 3: Hide Photos & VideosIf you have pictures that you wish to hide, simply tap on "Private Album" to get started. Tapping on the + symbol in the upper-right corner will open your gallery. From there, simply choose the pictures and videos you want to hide by tapping on them and selecting "Hide" button on the bottom. Photos and videos that you choose to hide completely transfers over to PrivateMe, totally erasing it from your Android file system. Since there's technically nothing to detect, even plugging your device via USB to your PC or Mac will come up with zero results as far as your private photos and videos are concerned.

Step 4: Enable Virtual KeysAs mentioned before, PrivateMe is basically a mini-OS that operates within your Android system. As such, it'll need its own virtual keys to enable you to navigate to and fro without having to exit and re-enter the app every time you want to switch tasks. So to enable PrivateMe's virtual keys, open the side navigation menu and select Quick Touch, then use the toggle switch to turn the feature on. When you first set it up, turning on the Quick Touch feature will automatically take you to PrivateMe's app settings page. Scroll down and select "Permission Manager," then tap on "Display Floating Window." Finally, select "Accept," then you'll automatically be redirected to PrivateMe's main screen, which will now have a virtual button that allows you to switch between apps or go to the home screen without exiting and restarting the app. The interface here is amazingly similar to MIUI's "Quick Ball" feature, so it's just a matter of tapping the floating bubble to expand the menu.Don't Miss: Get MIUI's 'Quick Ball' Navigation Gestures on Any Android

Step 5: Hide or Lock PrivateMeNow that the app is all set up, it's time to either lock it up or hide it entirely. Camouflaging PirvateMe is by far one of the coolest features of the app. To enable, open PrivateMe and head to the side navigation menu. Now tap on "Protection for PrivateMe," and you'll be presented with two options to either cover the app or simply lock it with a code. Since locking PrivateMe leaves the app in your app drawer, we'd recommend choosing the "Cover PrivateMe" option here. This will prompt you to create a numeric lock in the guise of a fully-functional calculator app. Simply enter your desired numeric code and tap on the = sign to proceed, confirming along the way. Once you've set this feature up, you'll only see the fake calculator in your app drawer, which you can open and type in your code to access PrivateMe. PrivateMe is not just for people who need to hide files to protect against snooping, but is also a great option for individuals, like parents, who need to hide sensitive files and protect them against accidental loss.It should also be noted that if you ever delete PrivateMe from your phone, all data within will also be deleted. So all of the apps and pictures you hid in there will be lost, and you'll have to start fresh next time. Of course, this is actually a good thing, because if you ever suspect that your phone will be captured by unwanted parties, you can quickly delete all of your secret stuff in just a few taps—erasing all evidence. How do you like PrivateMe? Are there other apps out there that you'r recommend?
