How To: Make an AC Arc Welder Using Parts from an Old Microwave, Part 1

How To: Make an AC Arc Welder Using Parts from an Old Microwave, Part 1

In a previous article, I demonstrated an Arc Welder made using parts from old microwave ovens. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.
Here is part 1 of 2 on how that arc welding machine was made, and how you could make one too! This is the first of two parts on building it, focusing on the modification of the transformers. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.
WARNING: Stick welding, and/or the modification of a Microwave Oven Transformer (M.O.T), can be very dangerous and presents risks of UV radiation, shock hazards, burns, fires, fumes and a multitude of other risks. This project should not be attempted without a thorough understanding of electricity, adult supervision and adequate training. Misuse, or careless use, of tools or projects may result in serious injury and/or death. Use of this content is at your own risk. In a previous project, I melted the lead wires on my first metal melter. But the transformer core was still in great condition, so I re-used it to make an AC stick welder! The arc welder made sparks fly, but in the end, it wasn't enough power to make the metal stick, and the pieces of work would break apart with very little effort. If I tried pumping more power into the welder, the wires would overheat and melt.So to address this challenge, we'll be using 2 MOTs (Microwave Oven Transformers), because more transformers means more power! Preparing the MOTs for a new secondary is exactly the same as the first few steps we took in the Metal Melter project. As it's a little redundant, I won't spend much time on the step-by-step instructions for that, but if you haven't seen it yet, you can check out the video, or reference my previous article. To make life a lot easier, you're going to need to build a little jig for winding your secondary. It's unlikely you'll get all the required turns of wire in such a tight space without one.To make this jig, I used a piece of scrap wood and cut it so that it was as wide as the center of the transformer, and just a little shorter than the top. The length was cut so that it overhung about 1/2" from the ends.I screwed wood panels on the top and bottom to guide the wires and keep them in place, then folded a piece of paper so that it fit in the groove.Once mounted in a bench vice for leverage, the cable can be wound on.For this project, try to round up around 50'of 8 AWG stranded copper cable from a local hardware store. You could probably save some money by scavenging for free wire, but I decided to look at the "end of coil" section at the hardware store, and was able to negotiate a deal for half price on the cable, so the 50' only cost me about $17.These modified MOTs will need a new secondary that is 18 turns of the 8 AWG cable, and both MOTs will be tied together in series. I also found I needed to run the system on 240 volts AC to get the power output for good welding. My goal was 30+ volts AC with a variable amperage from 0-120+ Amps.In practical terms, this means you need to wind the coil on the form so that you end up with 6 cable lengths high, and 3 cable lengths wide. Oh yeah, and it all needs to be able to fit back in the transformer, so wind it tight! The first layer isn't too bad, but winding the second layer, and third get progressively more difficult, and may seem near impossible.Once you get the 18 turns of wire to fit in the groove, you can fold the paper over, and tape it together to help the coil hold together. Here's the tricky part .. get it off the jig without letting it unravel! The top and bottom panels can be removed, and the block pushed out from the center of the coil. I used electrical tape to make sure the coils stayed tight. Putting the secondary coil in the transformer is a very tight fit.I had the best success by using a set of clamps to squeeze the sides of the coil in, while I used a rubber hammer to gently tap the coil down. When it's in, the coil had better fit below the top edge of the transformer, otherwise you won't be able to get the top back on.Securing the top on is the same as in the Metal Melter project as well. Basically, use 2 part epoxy glue to cover the entire top surface, then replace the iron lid and press it together tightly in clamps or a large vice. It's extremely important to have a lot of pressure on the joint while the epoxy is setting. I let mine set for about 24 hours. The modified transformer is complete! The secondary coil is so tight in there, that any vibrations from the 60Hz mains power will be kept to a minimum. When both transformers are modified in the exact same way, we've basically got what we need for welding. All that's left is to clean it up a bit and make it more useful and presentable. By the way, these two exposed wires from the secondaries will become our ground clip and stinger.Well, there they are! The basic makings of an AC stick welder. From this point, it isn't difficult to finish the system up into a nice little hobby welder. Watch how to do that in Part 2. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.
If you haven't see the video yet, it's not too late. Watch it here!If you like this project perhaps you'll like some of my others. Check them out at thekingofrandom.com.

How To: Protect Yourself from macOS High Sierra's Glaring Empty-Password Security Flaw

How To: Protect Yourself from macOS High Sierra's Glaring Empty-Password Security Flaw
There's a new macOS vulnerability that hackers within physical reach of your computer can use to gain root access to your system and accounts. Just by using "root" as the username and a blank password on a privilege escalation prompt, someone can install malware on your computer, access hidden files, reset your passwords, and more. Root access gives them the ability to do anything they want.Right now, this only appears to affect Mac users running macOS High Sierra 10.13.1.

How to See if Your System in VulnerableTo test if your system could be hacked, go to the "Users & Groups" section in "System Preferences," and click on the lock icon at the bottom of the pane to make changes. Remove your username and replace it with "root" instead. Next, click inside the password box, then hit the "Unlock" button. You may have to hit "Unlock" a few times to get it to unlock, but it will eventually work unless you manually set a root password on your Mac, which you likely didn't. This is just one example, but any security prompt asking for a username and password can be bypassed in this way, including on the login screen.

How to Protect Yourself from This Local HackTo protect yourself from this huge security flaw (CVE-2017-13872), install the Security Update 2017-001 from Apple immediately, which was issued on Wednesday, Nov. 29. Just open up the Mac App Store app, go to the "Updates" tab, then hit "Update" next to the security update. Apple states that "a logic error existed in the validation of credentials" in their description of the update's content. If you need root user access yourself, you'll have to re-enable and select a new password from the Directory Utility in System Preferences. Previously, before Apple released the patch, the only way to protect yourself (besides enabling the root user manually) was to make sure you were logged in as administrator and open up the Terminal app, which could be found in the "Utilities" folder in "Applications" or through a Spotlight search for it. Once there, you would do the following.Type sudo passwd -u root and hit enter. Enter your current admin password and hit enter. Enter a new password for root and hit enter. Re-enter the root password to confirm and hit enter. After using the trick above, if you try to use the "root" and blank password to gain root access on a privilege escalation prompt, it won't work, and you'll need to enter your new root password in. After updating with Apple's patch, it won't work either, but you also won't have a root password. If you used the Terminal trick or created a root password manually, make sure to remember your new root password or keep it in a password manager you can access from other devices. If you should lose it, it will be a difficult process to reset it should you need to.Follow Gadget Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, Google+, YouTube, and Instagram Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Google+

How To: Automatically Launch Two Apps at the Same Time in Android's Multi-Window Mode

How To: Automatically Launch Two Apps at the Same Time in Android's Multi-Window Mode
Android 7.0 Nougat brought a lot of multitasking improvements along with it, but the most notable addition is a unified multi-window mode (which shines bright in Google's Pixel phones). This means that every Android device can now use the same split-screen interface, and the days of software fragmentation caused by differing multi-window implementations by LG and Samsung are now over. For us end users, this unified multi-window system means that app developers can now create split-screen mods that works on all phones and tablets running Android 7.0 or higher. One of the first such apps is a tool that allows you to create home screen shortcuts that automatically open a pair of apps side by side, and I'll show you how it works below.Don't Miss: Everything You Need to Know About Nougat's Awesome Multitasking Features

Step 1: Install ScreensThe app that lets you launch two apps side by side in Android Nougat's split-screen mode is called Screens - Multi Window Manager from developer Keep Away From Fire, so start by getting it installed on your device.Install Screens for free from the Google Play Store

Step 2: Enable the Accessibility ServiceOnce you've got the app installed, head to Android's main Settings menu, then open the Accessibility sub-menu. From here, select "Screens" from the list of services, then enable the switch at the top of the screen and press "OK" on the pop-p.

Step 3: Create Multi-Window ShortcutsOpen the Screens app from your app drawer, and you'll see two + buttons near the top of the screen—the upper + button is for choosing the app that will open on the top or left in multi-window mode, and the lower + button is for picking an app to open on the bottom or right in multi-window mode.So tap each + button, then choose an app for each slot. Once you're done there, enter a name for your multi-window shortcut, then press the "Create Shortcut" button. Immediately after you do this, a shortcut will be created on your home screen.

Step 4: Launch Two Apps at OnceFrom now on, whenever you want to open both of these apps in split-screen mode directly, just tap the icon on your home screen. If your device is in portrait mode, the apps will open with one on the top and one on the bottom. Otherwise, if you're in landscape mode, the apps will open side by side. Some great uses for this functionality would be to have your favorite texting app and web browser open simultaneously, that way you could copy and paste links when you find something your friends might enjoy. You could also open a Reddit app along with YouTube for maximum memes, or split the screen between your banking app and Google Sheets to balance your budget. What split-screen app combos have you created? Let us know in the comment section below.Don't Miss: How to Run the Same App Side by Side in Nougat's Multi-Window ModeFollow Gadget Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, Google+, and YouTube Follow Android Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Google+

FaceTime 101: How to Add or Remove Email Addresses to Be Reached At on Your iPhone

FaceTime 101: How to Add or Remove Email Addresses to Be Reached At on Your iPhone
On your iPhone, your phone number and Apple ID email address are the default ways in which somebody can contact you on FaceTime. While you can't remove your phone number as an option, you can remove your Apple ID email account. More importantly, you can add any other email addresses you'd like to this list, so you never have to worry about a friend, family member, or coworker not being able to audio or video chat with you.For this guide, I'll assume that you have already turned FaceTime on and allowed your Apple ID email address to be used for FaceTime audio and video calls. Also, in iOS 10, there are multiple ways to associate email addresses with your Apple ID for FaceTime use, while in iOS 11, there is only one way. I'll show you the easy way in iOS 10 first, then the harder way for both iOS 10 and iOS 11.

Add Emails for FaceTime (iOS 10 & Under)Open up your iPhone's Settings app, then select "FaceTime" from the list. In the FaceTime settings, tap on "Add Another Email" under the You Can Be Reached by FaceTime At section. Input your new email address, then press "Return" on your keyboard. Since this email address has to be associated with your Apple ID account, Apple will send an email to the address for security purposes. Don't Miss: How to Take Live Photos of FaceTime Video Calls in iOS 11When you get the email, tap on "Verify" to open up verification page in your web browser, then just submit your Apple ID password. Once submitted, the "Verifying" indicator next to email address in the FaceTime settings will disappear and the email will be check-marked and will also appear as an option for your FaceTime Caller ID. Important note: If you try to add multiple emails at the same time without verifying each one before adding the next, once you verify one email address, all of the others you entered will disappear on the screen. However, if you verify them with Apple via the emails, they will show up back in the list afterward.

Remove Emails for FaceTime (iOS 10 & Under)If you want to get rid of an associated email address so that you can't be contacted with it on FaceTime, you can simply tap on the email address under You Can Be Reached by FaceTime At section to uncheck it. This won't remove it entirely, but will just keep people from contacting you.To remove it altogether, tap on the "i" (info) button next to it, then select "Remove This Email." After that, confirm by selecting "Remove Email Address." Just note that this only removes the email address from FaceTime, and it will still be listed as an option for iMessage and will still be associated with your Apple ID. To remove it completely from your Apple ID, see the last section below. Important note: Some email addresses you can't remove this way, such as alternative iCloud accounts for @mac.com, @icloud.com, and @me.com. However, you can still un-check them so FaceTime doesn't use them.

Add New Emails to FaceTime (iOS 10 & iOS 11)If you're running iOS 11 on your iPhone, you won't be able to add new email addresses the same way as above. It's actually less intuitive, but still pretty easy to do. Plus, you can add them this way in iOS 10, too, so it's not entirely new.Open up your Settings app, then tap on your name at the top, then "Name, Phone Numbers, Email" on the next page. Then, select "Edit" next to Reachable At. Next, choose "Add Email or Phone Number" at the bottom of the Reachable At list, then select "Add an Email Address" from the prompt. Note that you can enter in phone numbers here, but they don't seem to work for either FaceTime or iMessage, so we're not quite sure what adding a phone number will actually do.Don't Miss: How to Save Cellular Data by Using Wi-Fi Only for FaceTime Audio & Video Calls Then, wait for Apple to send you a verification email to that email address. Once you get it, input the 6-digit code onto your iPhone's screen and you'll be set.Shortly afterward, you'll see a popup asking to "Add '[email address]' for iMessage and FaceTime." If you select "Yes," you won't have to do anything else. If you select "No" because you don't want to use it with iMessage, then you'll have to go to FaceTime in Settings and check the new email you just added, like above in the iOS 10 section.

Remove Email Addresses for FaceTime (iOS 10 & iOS 11)If you want to stop using an email address for FaceTime in iOS 11, you can un-check it in the FaceTime settings, just like we did above for iOS 10. However, you cannot remove the email address from the list here like you could above. You only have the option to remove the email from FaceTime, iMessage, and your Apple ID altogether. To do so, in the main "Name, Phone Numbers, Email" page highlighted in the above section, tap on "Edit," then tap the minus sign in the red circle to the left of the email you want to remove. Next, select "Delete" on the right and "Remove" on the popup to confirm you want to disassociate it with services like iMessage and FaceTime. And again, you can't remove certain email addresses entirely from your Apple ID, such as iCloud aliases for @mac.com, @icloud.com, and @me.com. However, you can still un-check them in FaceTime's settings.Don't Miss: How to Change Your FaceTime Caller ID to an Email Address or Your Phone NumberWhile this is all fairly easy to do, either on iOS 10 or iOS 11, it does seem a little more complicated than it needs to be. Hopefully, Apple will streamline this process, which they seem to want to do by removing the ability to remove emails from either FaceTime or iMessage independently when you can just un-check them in those situations where you don't want to remove the email entirely.Follow Gadget Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, Google+, YouTube, and Instagram Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Google+

How To: Get Live FM Radio on Your Galaxy S8 or S8+
The Galaxy S8 and S8+ come equipped with all of the hardware needed to access live FM radio, but this feature was never really advertised or even spoken about. Thankfully, though, all you need is an app to enable it.Samsung's using two different processors to power the S8 — the overseas variants use an Exynos chip, while the North American models use a Snapdragon SoC. Only the Snapdragon S8 variants are equipped with an FM receiver chip, which may explain why Samsung hasn't advertised the feature, but also means that US-based users can listen to live FM radio. The only trouble is, the Snapdragon variant doesn't come with instructions or a stock app allowing you to use the FM tuner. But to get it working, all you need is an FM radio app and a pair of headphones (the AKG-tuned Samsung earbuds that came with your phone will work just fine), so let's check out all the details below.Don't Miss: 10 Galaxy S8 Features You Need to Know About

Step 1: Download NextRadioTo start off, you'll want to download an app called NextRadio Free Live FM Radio onto your Snapdragon-powered Galaxy S8 or S8+. It's free to install, so go ahead and tap on the link below from your phone to open up the Play Store download page.Install NextRadio for free from the Google Play Store

Step 2: Set Up NextRadio & Connect Your HeadphonesNext, go ahead and open the app. NextRadio will ask for location permissions as well as your ZIP code, and once it has those, you'll get the opportunity to select your favorite local radio stations. From there, connect any pair of wired headphones (they'll be used as an antenna), and you'll be all set to listen to live FM radio. Yep, it's really that easy — which makes one wonder why Samsung didn't include a stock radio app like many other OEMs. Do you have any theories on why Samsung basically hid this feature away? If so, let us know in the comment section below.Don't Miss: The Safest Way to Disable All Bloatware on Your Galaxy S8 or S8+Follow Gadget Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, Google+, YouTube, and Instagram Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Google+
