How To: Scroll Better on Android Using These Gestures

How To: Scroll Better on Android Using These Gestures
Smartphones are designed to be used in portrait mode primarily, so smartphone apps are created with that layout in mind. This means that practically every app on your phone is vertically oriented, which, in turn, means that we have to scroll up and down quite a bit.So developer Ouadban Youssef took note of this trend and created an app that drastically minimizes the amount of scrolling you have to do. With a simple two-finger swipe, the rest of the page you're viewing will scroll automatically, and this works in any app. To top that off, there's a three-finger swipe gesture that lets you jump back to the top or bottom of any page, so it's a really intuitive app that can save you a lot of time.
Requirementrooted Android device

Step 1: Install Kinetic ScrollTo get this one going, the first thing you'll need to do is install the app, which is called Kinetic Scroll.Install Kinetic Scroll for free from the Google Play Store

Step 2: Enable the ServiceNext, open Kinetic Scroll and enable the "Start service" option at the top of the screen. Within a few seconds, the app will ask for Superuser access, so tap "Grant" on the popup. From there, if you'd like the scrolling gestures to be active at all times, make sure to enable the "Persistent activation" option.

Step 3: Enable Per-App Blacklisting (Optional)If you have any apps that already use two- or three-finger gestures, Kinetic Scroll might cause conflicts. So if you'd like to set up a blacklist to exclude any such app, start by tapping the + button at the bottom of Kinetic Scroll's main menu, then press "Go to settings" when prompted. From here, simply select the Kinetic Scroll entry in the list, then toggle the switch at the top of the following menu, and press "OK" to activate the app's accessibility plugin. Next, head back to Kinetic Scroll, and tap the + button at the bottom of the screen again. From here, simply select any apps that might have conflicts with Kinetic Scroll's gestures, then press "OK." Once you've done that, you can select any of these apps from the main menu, then use the subsequent screen to set custom options on a per-app basis.

Step 4: Adjust Additional Settings (Optional)While most of the app's options require purchasing the pro version for $1.99 via an in-app purchase, there are a pair of interesting options available in the free version. So if you'd like to adjust these, tap the three-dot menu button at the top of the screen, then head to the "Settings" entry. From here, the "Speed of scrolling" option lets you adjust how fast the automatic scrolling will be. Then, beneath the Fingers header, you can change the amount of fingers required to initiate either of the main swipe gestures. I'd recommend against setting either of these options to "1 Finger," though, because that might interfere with gestures in other apps.

Step 5: Automatically Scroll Any AppWith everything set up now, using Kinetic Scroll's features is incredibly easy. Just open any app, then swipe up or down using two fingers, and you'll see that the rest of the page now scrolls automatically. To stop the automatic scrolling, just tap anywhere on your screen. Then, if you find yourself at the bottom of a page and you'd like to scroll back to the top, simply swipe up using three fingers, and almost instantly, you'll be returned to the top of the page. The same goes for swiping down with three fingers to get to the bottom of any page, so it's a great time saver. News: Android 8.1 Oreo New Feature Roundup What's Coming to Pixel & Nexus Devices
Google just released the second developer preview of the Android 8.1 update for Nexus and Pixel devices, and even though it's just a point-one release, there are lots of cool changes. Before you run off to join the Android beta program and try the new version, it's worth reading up on what's new.The first developer preview came and went, and DP2 is the last beta release before the final public version of Android 8.1 Oreo starts hitting all devices in December. So far, we've found several interesting changes like a new power menu and an actual Oreo Easter egg, but we'll keep updating this post with any new features we find as we continue to dig into the latest Oreo release.Don't Miss: 27 Cool New Features & Changes in Android Oreo

1. Pixel 2-Style Power MenuOne of the nicer touches with the Pixel 2's firmware is a power menu that animates out from the physical power button when you long-press it. It's a lot smaller than the old Power Off/Restart dialog box, and we're happy to report that it's now present on older Google devices like the Nexus 6P and the first-gen Pixels. Image by Dallas Thomas/Gadget Hacks

2. An Actual Oreo Easter EggBack in the Android O developer preview days, Google added octopus Easter egg that appears when you spam-tap the "Android version" entry in Settings –> System –> About phone, then tap and long-press an "O" logo. The octopus animation's still around, but that generic "O" has finally been changed to an Oreo cookie in Android 8.1 to fit the official code name. Image by Dallas Thomas/Gadget Hacks

3. Automatic Dark ThemeAnother Pixel 2-exclusive feature has been brought to Google's older devices, and this one's a lot more noticeable than the subtle power menu tweak. When you set a black wallpaper using the default launcher, your Quick Settings menu will automatically change to a darker color. Same goes for the app drawer background in the Pixel Launcher, so you no longer have to shock your eyes at night with those bright white backgrounds just to open an app or turn off Bluetooth.

4. Semi-Transparent Notification ShadeHere's another Pixel 2 feature that has now made its way to older devices: The Quick Settings menu now has a semi-transparent background. It's really hard to notice unless you're looking for it, but you can see how it works in various scenarios by checking out the following article:Don't Miss: The Pixel 2 Has a Semi-Transparent Notification Shade

5. Hide Those Annoying Ongoing NotificationsAndroid 8.0 introduced two new notifications that, strangely, couldn't be dismissed. One appeared any time that one or more of your apps was running in the background, and the other showed up when you had an app that can draw over other apps. Neither of these notifications could be dismissed without some hackery.Thankfully, Android 8.1 has given us the option to hide the "Apps running in the background" and "Apps drawing over other apps" notifications. You still can't swipe them away, but with a tiny bit of work, you can hide them permanently. Check out the following guide to see how:Don't Miss: Android 8.1 Finally Lets You Hide Those Annoying Background Notifications One of those pesky non-dismissable notifications that you can now hide in Android 8.1.

6. Color-Matched Darkening EffectFor years now, when you pull down your notification shade, Android has darkened the portions of the screen that are not covered by the Quick Settings menu or the notifications. This helps put the focus on the overlay menu itself, and the effect is still present in Android 8.1, but a pop of color has been added. The darkening effect pulls accent colors from your home screen wallpaper now, but it's subtle. You wouldn't notice if you were just looking at notifications while on your home screen, but if you bring up a white menu like the Google Now page or your app drawer before pulling down the notification shade, it becomes apparent. This effect is only visible while you're on your lock screen or your home screen, so it's not present while you're using other apps. The darkening effect with a blue wallpaper (1), pink wallpaper (2), and green wallpaper (3) applied.

7. Anti-Burn-in ButtonsIn an apparent move to help resolve burn-in issues with the Pixel 2 XL's POLED screen (or is it screen retention?), Google has made the on-screen navigation buttons dimmable. When you move from one app to another, the buttons are as opaque as they'd normally be — but after a few seconds in the new app, they fade to semi-transparent.Don't Miss: LG's POLED Issues Are Affecting the Pixel 2 XL Image by Dallas Thomas/Gadget Hacks Another anti-screen retention and anti-burn-in measure is evident in the Settings menu — the navigation bar now has a white background instead of the regular black. This is because "burnt-in" buttons aren't actually the problem. All pixels in OLED screens decay with normal use, but pixels that are always black, like the ones in the bottom nav bar, don't decay as fast as the rest of the screen. In other words, even though the buttons stand out as evidence of burn-in, it's the "fresher" pixels normally occupied by the navigation bar's background that make burn-in noticeable. Understanding OLED burn-in (watch the nav bar). Image by Dallas Thomas/Gadget Hacks

8. Bluetooth Battery IndicatorIf you have any Bluetooth accessories that support the Hands-Free or GATT profiles (typically Bluetooth 4.0 LE or higher), you'll now see how much battery life your accessory has left. Anytime a supported device is connected, Android 8.1 will display its battery life in the Quick Settings menu as well as the full Bluetooth menu. This is something iOS and various OEM-skinned versions of Android have had for quite some time, but it's nice to see the feature being added to stock Android.

9. Cleaner Toast MessagesKeeping with the theme of interface polish, Google has made toast messages in Android 8.1 look a lot cleaner. Instead of the semi-transparent rounded gray backgrounds that made their debut back in the Lollipop days, toast messages are now almost white with black text. It's a simple change, but it looks much better.

10. (Slightly) Rounded Status Bar IconsCredit to Android Police for finding this subtle gem: The status bar icons in Android 8.1 now have rounded corners. It's a subtle refinement touch, but perhaps more noticeable is the fact that both the status bar indicators on the right and the notification icons on the left have been pushed inward a tiny bit to accommodate rounded display corners — even on phones with square corners. Android 8.0 (top) compared to Android 8.1 (bottom)

11. Saturated Color Profile for Pixel 2 XLThis change isn't specific to Android 8.1, but it's a new addition in the second developer preview build Google just launched in late November. As we know, the Pixel 2 XL's POLED display has a few issues, and perhaps the most visible problem has been drab colors and a cool white point. These issues have been fixed in Android 8.1 with the addition of a new color profile. In Settings –> Display –> Advanced –> Colors, you'll find a new "Saturated" color profile that makes the Pixel 2 XL's display much more vivid. Aside from giving colors a boost in saturation, this option also warms up the screen's white point. To the naked eye, it appears as though whites drop from roughly 6,000 K down to a more realistic 4,500 K.Personally, this is the most exciting change in 8.1 for me. The Pixel 2 XL always looked way too "cool" for my tastes, but now, the colors are almost identical to the first-gen Pixel XL.
Eligible DevicesOnly Google's own devices will be eligible to try the beta version of Android 8.1, and even then, only newer models. The full list of supported devices is as follows:Nexus 5X Nexus 6P Pixel C Pixel Pixel XL Pixel 2 Pixel 2 XL
Bugs & General ChangesGoogle's changelog for the first developer preview of Android 8.1 included quite a few bugs, but these all appear to have been squashed in the second developer preview. DP2 is also CTS certified, meaning the build passes SafetyNet. From the looks of things, there's not much left for Google to work on before releasing the stable version of 8.1 in the coming weeks. It should also be noted that Pixel Visual Core, the dedicated Google-made image signal processor in Pixel 2 devices, is now enabled on the software side for developers of third-party apps. This won't have any impact on the stock camera app experience, nor will it be a huge change in the short term. Eventually, though, some third-party camera apps might get a little better on the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL because of it.
How to Try Android 8.1 Right NowIf you're fine with the above-listed bugs and you just can't wait until December to try Android 8.1, the easiest way to get the new release is to join the Android beta program. Shortly after you've enrolled your eligible device, you'll receive an OTA update that will automatically install Android 8.1.There are a few disclaimers involved here, namely the fact that you can't be rooted to use this method. Additionally, you won't be able to downgrade back to Android 8.0 without wiping your device. To get yourself up to speed on all of these issues and see how to enroll in the Android beta program, check out our full guide on the subject:Don't Miss: How to Enroll in the Android Beta Program & Receive Updates Before Anyone ElseFollow Gadget Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, Google+, YouTube, and Instagram Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Google+

How To: Turn All of Your Email Accounts into Unlimited Free Cloud Storage!

How To: Turn All of Your Email Accounts into Unlimited Free Cloud Storage!

The majority of our documents and music are digital, which is great for convenience, but it presents a problem for those with a lot of stuff—where do you store it all? There are tons of sites that offer cloud storage, like Dropbox, SkyDrive, and even Flickr, but most of them have limits unless you want to pay, and no way to connect them all.Email accounts, however, usually offer more free storage than cloud services. Dropbox starts at 2GB for free, while Gmail now gives users 15GB (it used to be 10GB). A new service called Backup That decided to take advantage of all that space in your mailbox by turning it into free cloud storage. The service is easy to use, but still pretty buggy (it's currently in Beta). The site doesn't work in Internet Explorer, and is optimized for Chrome on a PC and Firefox on a Mac. It also requires that you have Java enabled and up to date (it took a couple tries to recognize the newest version on my computer and crashed my browser several times). After signing up, you can connect as many email accounts as you want for unlimited storage space. It currently works with Gmail, Yahoo, AOL, and several other email providers with IMAP support. From here, you can add individual files or whole folders by clicking on Add Files. To add a file to a group, just drag and drop it into the box for the group. Once a file has been uploaded, you can access it from any device by clicking Download. As of right now, there's no way to view the file online without downloading it.Once an email account is connected, it creates a folder in your mailbox for the files you store on Backup That. Adding additional accounts is easy. In the top right corner, hover over your username and choose Settings from the drop-down menu, then click Add an Account and enter the email address and password for the account you want to connect. You can also store music on Backup That and stream it from all your devices. Currently, only iTunes playlists are supported, but they plan on adding support for other MP3 files later. To upload playlists, go to Music and click on Add Music, then select the playlists you want to sync with your account. The uploader has a few quirks and tends to time out if you're trying to upload large batches of music at once. Songs upload a few at a time, but once you add them there's no way to organize them. Hopefully future developments will include better file management for music.Overall, Backup That has a long way to go. Signing up and connecting accounts is easy, but the service itself still has a lot of bugs. As of right now, there's no way to tell how much storage you have available (unless you check your email clients directly), and the file management could definitely be refined, especially on the music side. There are no mobile apps yet, but they're working on one for both iOS and Android (you can preview them here).Backup That is far from perfect, but with some improvements and additional features it could be a great option for free cloud storage. If all you want to do is store files and access them on the go, it gets the job done. Regardless of its deficiencies, it's hard to complain too much about unlimited free storage.Give it a try and let us know what you think.Gmail photo via BestWallpaperHD

News: iOS 11.3 Update Ruins 3D Touch on iPhones

News: iOS 11.3 Update Ruins 3D Touch on iPhones
It's no secret that iOS 11 is one buggy piece of software. Remarkably, even after three major updates, we're still seeing issues with our iPhones. This time, the glitches have come for 3D Touch on iPhones running the new iOS 11.3 update. The issue occurs when locking an iPhone from the home screen. When unlocking the iPhone with Touch ID or Face ID, 3D Touch is disabled momentarily. If you try to use the feature on an app icon immediately after unlocking your iPhone, your device will simply prompt you to edit the home screen. If you move the screen or wait a couple seconds (or exit edit mode if you unintentionally opened that), 3D Touch usually starts working.
The issue also appears with notifications on the lock screen. If attempting to preview with 3D Touch, iOS 11.3 will simply open and launch the notification. However, unlike the home screen, the lock screen issue varies from device to device. Our iPhone X would sometimes allow you to use 3D Touch on notifications after waiting some time, but an iPhone 8 Plus wouldn't work at all. Our other iPhone 8 Plus, as well as our iPhone 7 Plus, had no lock screen problems whatsoever. While the lock screen bugs appear intermittent, we can confirm the home screen 3D Touch issue exists on iPhone X, iPhone 8 Plus, and iPhone 7 Plus models running 11.3. However, we expect all iPhones running this version of iOS will experience them as well. Disabling 3D Touch, force-starting the device, then re-enabling the feature does not fix anything. While not the worst iOS bug we've seen this time around, we're hoping Apple issues a quick 11.3.2 fix for this glitch (iOS 11.3.1 did not fix this issue). Considering 11.3 went through six beta versions over two months, one would expect Apple to catch these bugs with some speed. However, even though the first and second iOS 11.4 beta did not fix these issues either, iOS 11.4 beta 3 finally did, indicating the fix will likely come to everyone with iOS 11.4 and not 11.3.2. If you can't wait any longer, you can join the public beta and update to iOS 11.4 beta 3.Don't Miss: 23 Cool New Features in iOS 11.3 for iPhoneFollow Gadget Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Flipboard Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Flipboard
