How To: 20 Tips to Help You Master Gboard for iPhone
Gboard is one of the best third-party keyboards available for iPhones, but you probably don't know everything you need to know about it to become a real Gboard pro and stop using Apple's stock keyboard for good.I've tried many third-party keyboards on my iPhone since they were introduced back in iOS 8, but my favorite after all these years is still Gboard. It may have been late to the game by 8 months, but it's impressive enough to have taken over SwiftKey and other challengers. And while Swype held top place in iTunes charts until it was discontinued in 2018, Gboard is totally free and updated on a regular basis.Gboard is available either from the Gboard app itself or from the Google app. The latter is nice because it's basically two apps in one. If you tend to use Google Search a lot, it's a good choice since you can get personalized updates in your Google feed and a trending widget. However, while almost all of the features listed below work on both apps, there are a couple that only work in the main Gboard app right now.No matter which version you go with, make sure to keep it updated to make sure you can access all of these features. You can do this from the "Updates" tab in the App Store if you don't have your iPhone set up to install updates automatically.

Tip 1: Glide to 'Type' FasterOne of the biggest benefits of Gboard over Apple's stock keyboard is swipe-typing, which Google calls "glide" typing. Other third-party keyboards such as SwiftKey and Swype make this this hallmark trait, but it's just a serious bonus with Gboard. Compared to typing, it's so fast you'll wonder why you haven't been gliding sooner.

Tip 2: Use the Spacebar as a TrackpadTo get the cursor where you want, slide your finger back and forth on the spacebar. You can also use 3D Touch on the keyboard itself just like you can with Apple's keyboard, SwiftKey, and a few other options, but I like the spacebar option when only moving a little bit. With 3D Touch, I find that the cursor can move too fast or jump, so I save that for when I need to make big moves.
Tip 3: Get Haptic Feedback When TypingIn the standalone Gboard, there's a newer feature for feeling the keys when you tap them, but it's not on by default. You have to go into Gboard's settings to activate haptic feedback, and afterward, you'll feel a tiny vibration every time you tap on a key. It feels similar to the feedback you get when using the trackpad. When swiping to type, you'll feel it when you first touch the screen and again when you let go.More Info: Use Gboard's Keyboard to Feel Everything You Type on Your iPhone

Tip 4: Use It One-HandedYou can easily switch Apple's default keyboard to left- or right-sided use in iOS 11, but you can also do it in Gboard. It's a little easier to enable, plus it will remember your selection for next time. Just tap on the cog icon and hit "One-handed mode." From there, it's pretty intuitive: switch sides using the left/right arrows or hit expand to go back to normal.

Tip 5: Cuss All You WantIf you're used to the stock Apple keyboard, you know that you basically have to teach it to let you use curse words. Well, Google doesn't force you to train Gboard for cussing — you can enable explicit language in its settings. Just tap on the cog, followed by "Settings," then tap "Keyboard Settings." Find the "Block offensive words" option and toggle it off.

Tip 6: Search by Emoji NameWhen you type out words in Apple's stock keyboard, the QuickType bar will suggest some emoji you can use for specific words, but it doesn't work in all apps, such as Notes. Gboard works the same way, but everywhere, and it also lets you search for emoji by name. So if you want to see more options or find an elusive emoji with some guesswork, this makes it easy.Just tap the emoji icon and make sure emoji tab is selected (or just long-press the emoji icon and select the emoji symbol), then type away in the input box.

Tip 7: Switch Languages QuicklyIf you're bilingual, Google has you covered. By going to the settings, you can select "Languages" and choose between two additional keyboards that are installed. Just tap "Add language" and select the one you want, then repeat for a third, if necessary. When you need to switch keyboards, instead of using the globe icon to switch, just tap the cog to rotate. You can also long-press the cog, then select the language. Note that if you select three languages total, that the "Settings" option will disappear when you long-press the cog on the keyboard unless you have "One-handed mode" enabled.

Tip 8: Go with Dark ModeApple's stock keyboard automatically switches to a dark mode, but in my experience, it doesn't work that well and won't change in all apps you're using it. If you want a true dark mode keyboard, you can easily swap themes in Gboard.Tap the cog icon in the keyboard, select "Settings," followed by "Themes," then check the dark option under Default, and see your new dark keyboard in action.

Tip 9: Say What You Want to TypeGoogle doesn't seem to like Apple's built-in dictation tool, but you can still use Google's own dictation tool, which opens another interface that dictates what you say, then pastes that text in where you want it. Just long-press on the spacebar to automatically activate the audio recording option in Gboard or Google, say what you want, then it will appear typed out back where you were.

Tip 10: Access Punctuation QuicklySo, there is a little-known secret in Apple's keyboard that lets you quickly add a period, question mark, number, or another non-letter character, but Gboard's implementation is better and easier to get used to.Just tap and hold the period key (oh yeah, there's a freakin' period key!), then slide to pick your punctuation mark or character. For numbers, you'd do the same thing you do in Apple's version: tap the number key, then slide your finger over to the number you want without letting go of the screen.

Tip 11: Capitalize Words FasterAlong the same lines as the above tip, if you tap on the caps key then slide over to the letter you want to capitalize without letting go of the screen, then that letter will automatically be capitalized when you let go. This is useful when typing out acronyms and non-standard proper nouns that autocorrect can't figure out on its own. Of course, if you're typing out acronyms, you might just want to double-tap the caps key to enable caps lock.

Tip 12: Create Keyboard ShortcutsThere is no feature in Gboard that lets you actually create keyboard shortcuts, but all of the shortcut combinations you create in Settings –> General –> Keyboard –> Text Replacement will still work in Gboard. It's not as smooth as using it in Apple's QuickType keyboard, but it's better than nothing. Sometimes when you hit the spacebar or punctuation after typing your shortcut combo out Gboard will automatically expand the text where you want it, but other times it just adds a suggestion for the expanded text in the top bar.More Info: How to Use Keyboard Shortcuts to Type Long Words & Phrases Faster on Your iPhone

Tip 13: Use Google SearchIf you need to send somebody a link to an article or you just want to verify some information before you keep typing away, tap the "G" icon and type your query. You can tap on some suggestions that pop up or tap "Search" when done typing your query, then scroll through the results. Tapping on a result card or "Share" will input the link wherever you're typing, and tapping "Play," the arrow icon, and so on will open it up in YouTube, Safari, etc.

Tip 14: Find & Share GIFsIn a similar vein, Gboard makes it easy to find and share the perfect GIF. Just tap the "G" icon and type in a subject, then hit the "GIF" button at the bottom of the search results. From there, you can scroll sideways to find the perfect GIF. After that, just tap a GIF to copy it to your clipboard, then long-press the text entry field and choose "Paste" to send the GIF.

Tip 15: Share YouTube VideosUsing the "G" icon above the keyboard, you can also tap on "YouTube" to search only for videos on YouTube. Tapping on the video result or "Share" will paste the link into wherever you're typing, while tapping "Play" will open up YouTube, if installed.

Tip 16: And LocationsIf you have "Location" enabled in the "Gboard" settings, you can tap the "G" about the icon, then "Maps" to quickly select your current location to share. If it's not enabled, you can select "Turn on Location" on the first card that pops up. You can also search for nearby locations or swipe the default results to see what's nearby. Tapping on the card or "Share" will paste the location, while tapping the arrow icon will open up Google Maps, if installed.

Tip 17: Make Your Own GIFsTaking advantage of Motion Stills technology, you can now record three-second GIFs right from the keyboard (sort of). When you tap the camera loop icon in the word suggestions bar, the Gboard app itself will open right to its GIF maker where you can choose between a regular "Loop" or "Fast-Forward" GIF using your rear camera or selfie cam. You can even add text and drawings on top. This option is only available if you use the Gboard app, not the Google app.More Info: How to Use Gboard's New GIF Maker on Your iPhone

Tip 18: Find Emoji with EmoticonsI love using Tip 5 above to hunt for emoji by keywords, but you can also search for emoji by using emoticons, emoji's older sibling. So, if you type in :) you will get give you emoji suggestions up top for "grinning face," "grinning face with squinting eyes," and "slightly smiling face." At least, those are the default ones in my experience. Your mileage may vary depending on which ones you most often.Unfortunately, there still is no emoji for shrugging, so you'll still need to use the emoticon ¯\_(?)_/¯ (which you should just make a shortcut for since it's a pain to type out anyway).More Info: Gboard Makes Finding Emojis Even Easier on iPhone Gboard v. 1.17.0 without emoji suggestions (left) and with after updating to v. 1.18.0 (right).

Tip 19: Clear Your Search Historyif you used the Google, YouTube, and Maps search tips above, then you'll end up building quite a history. If you share your iPhone occasionally, that might not be a good thing, but you can easily wipe it. Open up the Gboard settings from the cog, then go to "Search settings" and tap on "Clear Gboard search history." When prompted, tap "OK," and you'll have a clean slate. However, if you use the Gboard version built into the Google app and just happen to be signed into your Google account, doing this will only delete the history in Gboard, not anything saved to your Google account.

Tip 20: Use Morse CodeThere's a Morse code keyboard hiding in Gboard's language settings, which lets you type out words with dots and dashes. If you already know Morse code, it's a great new way to type, and if you don't, it's a great new way to learn how people used to communicate via telegraph.More Info: How to Unlock & Use the Morse Code Keyboard in Gboard
Maybe We'll See More Cool Features SoonWhile these are some pretty awesome features that keep Gboard my default keyboard on iOS, I'm a little jealous of some of the Gboard features available on Android, such as easy translations, typing fractions, a dedicated number row, and deleting words and sentences by swiping. How To: 3 Ways to Get Around Google's Uncertified Device Ban

How To: 3 Ways to Get Around Google's Uncertified Device Ban
Google has started blocking certain devices from accessing the Google Play Store and other Google services. This is part of an effort to clamp down on OEMs that skirt its certification requirements, but now millions of phones have been uncertified to download or update Google apps. Fortunately, there are a few workarounds. To help ensure a consistent user experience on all the various Android devices out there, Google requires that manufacturers pass its Compatibility Test Suite, or CTS, if they want to ship devices with Google apps and services pre-installed. Most companies comply with these rules and get their phones certified. Others, however, will either fail this test or ignore it completely, then opt to sideload Google's apps and services instead, so the tech giant has taken severe action to curb this practice.Don't Miss: If You Live in the US, It's Time to Stop Buying ZTE Phones

See if Your Device Is UncertifiedBefore getting started, you'll want to make sure your device has been blacklisted by Google so you don't waste any time.If you purchased a banned handset, you'll get a warning prompt stating "device is not certified by Google," preventing you from signing into your Google account. Although you can still complete your phone's initialization, you won't be able to access the Google Play Store due to your device's uncertified status. If you're still unsure if you're affected, open the Play Store app. From there, head to the side menu by tapping on the hamburger icon in the top-left corner. Tap on "Settings" next, then you can see your phone's status by going to "Device certification" on the bottom of the page. If it says "Uncertified," try the tips below.

Option 1: Register Your Device with GoogleThe first workaround involves registering your device with Google. This method comes courtesy of Mishaal Rahman over at XDA. Unfortunately, this fix was originally meant for pre-approved and certified devices that were modified to run on custom ROMS like LineageOS or Resurrection Remix, so it won't work with all affected devices. To start, grab an app called Device ID, either from the Play Store or by sideloading this APK.Now you'll need to retrieve your handset's Google Services Framework ID, or GSF ID, to submit to Google for processing. So open the app and copy the number within the "Google Service Framework" tab. Once you've copied your GSF ID, go to Google's device registration page and paste your GSF ID in the blank field along the bottom, then tap on the green "Register" button after doing so. Immediately after tapping "Register," your registered ID should appear on the page. Save this for future reference, but there's nothing you need to do with it. Instead, just try logging into your Google account again or using the Play Store to download an app — while it will still appear as "Uncertified," this should whitelist your device and bring back most functionality.

Option 2: Use the Yalp Store InsteadIf this method failed to grant you access to Google services, there's a decent workaround. It won't let you use Google apps that depend on Google Play Services or an account login, but you will be able to download apps from the Play Store, at the very least. The Yalp Store is free to download, but because it's an APK file, it'll have to be sideloaded. So make sure you have Unknown Sources enabled on your device, and grab the file from the link below, then open it and press "Install" when prompted.Download the Yalp Store (.apk) Once you've got it installed, using the Yalp Store is pretty simple — it has all the same apps you know and love from Google Play, since it's actually downloading the apps from the Play Store for you. If you'd like to learn more about the Yalp Store's features, check out the following guide:Don't Miss: How to Install Apps from the Play Store without Google Services
Option 3: Use a Magisk Module (Root Required)If all else fails, the final option is the most difficult of the three, but it gives you the best chance of re-enabling Google apps and services. Basically, you'll have to root your device with Magisk, which is a root method and framework that doesn't trip up Google's SafetyNet system. We've outlined the proper way to root with Magisk at the following tutorial:Don't Miss: How to Root Your Device with MagiskOnce you've successfully rooted and installed the Magisk framework, open your Magisk Manager app and head to the Downloads section in the side menu. From there, search for "Play Store Visa" and install the top result. This module will trick the Play Store into thinking your device is certified, which should restore your ability to download apps, but may not fix any Google app login issues.Follow Gadget Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Flipboard Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Flipboard

How To: Turn Your iPhone into a Real-Time Interpreter

How To: Turn Your iPhone into a Real-Time Interpreter
Nothing beats a human translator, but Google Translate and other software-based solutions have developed into decent alternatives for help with basic translations. Need an English word translated into German? No problem — but what if you need to have a conversation with someone who doesn't speak your language? Is Google Translate capable of doing that? The answer is not really.Although Google Translate has conversation mode, which translates both sides of a spoken conversation between two different languages, it's a bit hollow and inefficient. You could potentially have a conversation with someone else on Google Translate, but it needs work done before it becomes a go-to. There are also the Google Pixel Buds, which provide real-time translation in your ear, but they only work with the Google Pixel and they'll set you back $129.If you're looking for a free option, Voice Translator from Alive Mobile is an improvement to Google Translate and other similar apps, by allowing you to effectively turn your iPhone into an instant interpreter.

Step 1: Download Voice TranslatorVoice Translator - Alive is available on iOS and coming soon to Android. According to its developers, it's the first ever voice translator app with 5 translation engines integrated, giving you more accurate translations than other apps. More than 115 languages are supported for text translations, while 36 languages are supported for voice translations.App Store Link: Voice Translator - Alive (free)

Step 2: Choose LanguagesUnlike Google Translate, Voice Translator is geared specifically towards real-time two-way instant translation, although you can do regular text-to-text translation as well. Open the app and you can then choose which two languages — including Arabic, English, Chinese, French, Korean, and Spanish — you want to have a conversation with. Simply tap on the flag icons at the top to change languages. Text-to-text translation is available by tapping on the top-left icon.

Step 3: Start a ConversationOnce you're ready to start a conversation with someone else, tap on the button with your language and speak. The app will recognize when you're finished talking and instantly translate your words out loud. You can also tap on the language button to stop it immediately. Pass the phone on to the next person to continue the conversation. Each time you finish speaking, a bubble will appear with what you said, as well as the translation. If at any time you want to repeat the translation, tap on the sound icon in each bubble.

Step 4: Edit Your Conversation (If Necessary)If the application doesn't properly decipher what you say, tap on the text at the top of the bubble and type in what you want it to say. The translation underneath will update along with any changes you make. If what you said is correct, but the translation doesn't look right, tap on the translation text at the bottom of each bubble to view more translations. You have four options to choose from — the major benefit of having five translation engines in one.

Step 5: Take Advantage of Multiple ToolsAnother feature that sets Voice Translator apart from Google Translate is the set of tools available to use while translating. Access these tools by tapping on the menu button at the top right: they include Photos, Browser, Maps, and Calculator. With the Photos feature, you can add any picture on your phone into the translator. This is helpful if you have a long list of things to discuss that you can't memorize. The translation bubbles will appear underneath the photo. Browser allows you to surf the web inside the translator. If there's a restaurant or bar you're looking for, and you need help finding it in a foreign country for example, you can do all of this within Voice Translator. Calculator drops a calculator into your translator, while Maps allows you to find directions within the app.

Step 6: Manage SettingsFinally, you have the settings, where you can manage several features, such as voice speed and end of speech detection. If you find that the translator keeps cutting you off when you're attempting to speak, toggle off the "Detect End of Speech" feature. You can also upgrade to Premium here, which comes with unlimited translations, offline translations, and no ads. The application is currently in beta, so be on the look out for improvements and more features in the near future.Don't Miss: Automatically Translate Any Android App into Any LanguageFollow Gadget Hacks on Pinterest, Reddit, Twitter, YouTube, and Flipboard Sign up for Gadget Hacks' daily newsletter or weekly Android and iOS updates Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Flipboard

People like to cite the iPhone as the device that started the smartphone craze, but the truth is, smartphones had existed for years by the time Apple got into the game. The real groundbreaking feature that this device brought to the table was a multi-touch screen to go along with its "smart" functionality, and this is still the main method we use to interact with our devices today.

How To: Get MIUI's 'Quick Ball' Navigation Gestures on Any Android

How To: Get MIUI's 'Quick Ball' Navigation Gestures on Any Android
Xiaomi phones run a skinned version of Android known as MIUI, which, over the years, has been a popular custom ROM. One of the standout features Xiaomi has added to the mix is something called Quick Ball, which lets you navigate your phone by swiping inward from a small circle that resides on the edge of your screen. It's quite similar to Paranoid Android's Pie Controls, except the aesthetic is a bit less Tron-like, and the point where you start your swipe gesture is actually visible. There are a few apps that try to emulate Quick Ball, but none have managed to do it as well as the development team at Mixiaoxiao, whose app we'll discuss below.Don't Miss: How to Get Paranoid Android's Halo & Pie Controls on Any Phone

Step 1: Install Zone AssistiveTouchThe app that almost perfectly clones MIUI's Quick Ball feature is called Zone AssistiveTouch, so install it from the Play Store to get started.Install Zone AssistiveTouch for free from the Google Play Store

Step 2: Enable the Accessibility PluginOpen the app, then tap "Enable Zone AssistiveTouch" and press the "Accessibility" button on the popup. From here, you'll be taken to a system settings menu, where you should select Zone AssistiveTouch from the list. Next, enable the toggle switch at the top of the screen, then press "OK" to give the app the permissions it needs.

Step 3: Adjust Settings (Optional)At this point, it would be a good idea to explore the various options provided by Zone AssistiveTouch. So from the app's main menu, look for the Customize function. This lets you change each of the buttons that appear when you touch or swipe on the Quick Ball, and you can have them do just about anything. Next, in the Customize appearance section, you can tweak the look and feel. For one thing, I'd recommend disabling the "Show top Menu-bar" option, as this feature only clutters up the interface. Beyond that, you can adjust the Quick Ball's size and opacity, and you can tweak the swipe gesture's sensitivity if you feel like it isn't as responsive as you'd like.

Step 4: Navigate Your Phone with a Quick BallOnce you've set everything up, you'll be ready to try out the new feature. You'll notice the Quick Ball sitting on the right edge of your screen, though you can drag it to any position you'd like. If you tap the ball, you'll see the various options, and tapping them would work just fine—but there's a better way.Instead of tapping, simply swipe inward from the ball, then move your finger over one of the buttons and let go. Swiping from the ball directly to the left takes you back one screen, down and to the left at a 45-degree angle brings you home, and straight down pulls up your recent apps list, so it's an extremely intuitive experience. How To: Watch Videos While You Work with This Floating Translucent Window for Mac

How To: Watch Videos While You Work with This Floating Translucent Window for Mac

Like most people who spend a good deal of time in front of their computer—whether for work, school, or play—I jump back and forth from window to window, working and playing with different things at the same time to get my work done faster or procrastinate harder. One thing I like to keep available at all times while I work is a small window playing a video, either because it's essential to what I'm doing or because I simply want to be entertained. Usually I just crop my web browser window down to a small size and tuck it away into one of the four corners, where I can glance over to it from time to time. Unfortunately this doesn't always pan out, for one of two reasons: it turns out to be too distracting, or it becomes obscured behind another app, making it difficult to watch.Helium helps with these two issues by allowing you to have a transparent window float anywhere above all of your other apps (even the active ones), so you can easily watch videos without distraction while you work and play on your Mac. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.
Download Helium on Your MacDownload Helium either from developer Jaden Geller's website or directly from this link, then unzip the file and move the Helium app over to your Applications folder. You may need to adjust your Mac's security settings to allow apps from unidentified developers before you can open it.

Watch Videos in a Floating WindowOnce you open Helium, a small window will appear asking you to make your way to a webpage through the menu bar. Click on "Location" and select "Open Web URL," then enter the URL of your choice into the address bar that appears—from Netflix, YouTube, Vimeo, or any other video-streaming site. Technically, you can enter any URL, but Helium is geared more towards video-centric websites. Once the URL loads up, play the video. The window will then float above all other apps on your computer, whether it be your web browser, photo-editing tool, music player, etc.To play videos from Netflix, you'll need to have Microsoft's Silverlight downloaded from Safari (which it ditched for HTML5 last year), if you don't already. Download it directly from here. Netflix You can also upload local video files (from your computer) by clicking on "Location" in the menu bar and going to "Open File." Helium offers built-in controls for you to rewind, fast-forward, and pause your video. Local video

Make Floating Window Transparent & "Invisible"Use Command + T on your keyboard to make the floating window translucent, at intervals which are customizable through the menu bar. When "translucent," the floating window not only becomes semitransparent, it also becomes "invisible," meaning that clicks go through it so that you can view what's behind it, as well as interact with it using your mouse. Click anywhere on the video and whatever is behind it in your other apps will be controlled, with the video fixed in place and out of the way. This allows for easy multitasking, because having a floating window stuck somewhere on your screen at all times can become a bit bothersome. When in this "invisible" mode, either enter Command + T or click on the Helium icon in your dock to regain control of the floating window. If you have any trouble with a video not playing, simply click on "Location" in the menu bar and use either "Reload" or "Clear" to restart the video or get rid of it completely.Follow Apple Hacks over on Facebook and Twitter, or Gadget Hacks over on Facebook, Google+, and Twitter, for more Apple tips.

To switch to another app while in one app, touch the Recent Apps icon at the bottom of the screen. NOTE: We used a Nexus 7 as an example for this article. If you are using a Samsung Galaxy device, press and hold the Home button. A list of open apps displays with thumbnails.
